Re: Catheter question for vaginal and c-section births

I had a c-section with DS.
Catheter came in after the spinal tap. It was about 3pm on a Friday. I felt NOTHING.
It was removed the next morning around 10am. It started bothering me at 8am. I could not imagine hurting so bad trying to pee again without it. I cried in PAIN for 2 hours until I was able to pee again. I had pain from it for a good 1.5 months after PP. My case was not typical though.
i had the same experience. i had wanted an all natural birth, but dd went into major distress in addition to being 5 weeks early and my midwife highly recommended an epidural since an emergency c-section was looking probable and at least that way i'd be awake when she was born (as opposed to being knocked out).
they put the catheter in after the epidural - felt nothing. took it out right before pushing - again felt nothing. everything seemed fine after that - peed a bit after giving birth and got sent to the mother/baby floor where all things went to crap. i got up there around noonish and didn't pee again until after 8pm with much "help" (TMI - aka being hosed down by dh and a nurse to help things along - it took about an hour of this to get enough out where i wasn't in pain anymore) and almost needing another catheter (the nurse ran in with it right as a little came out). yes, you really do lose all shame in labor and delivery. it was awful. i had problems peeing until 2-3 weeks later (though thankfully nothing as bad as the first night). i was so mad too because i never wanted the epidural (though i didn't really have a choice at the time) and it's just made me resolve even more to avoid on at all costs for the next kid.
i do think i had a freak reaction to it though as i've heard no one else talk about this as a side effect and everyone i do tell is surprised that this happened to me.
