Catholic Schools
I have a last minute interview (just found out, 8 am this morning) on Tuesday 8/30.
I have never interviewed for a Catholic school. Any tips? Are they still part of the NYS retirement system? I would be declining health benefits, do they reimburse you?
Any interview tips? I'm desperate for a job... it is so late in the summer and this is probably my last attempt for a job.

This was a couple of years ago, but two questions I remember was how I would approach teaching religion and how I would integrate technology into the classroom. It was for a elem. ed. position.

i think i remember being asked about how i would involve families of students and foster a sense of community in the classroom or something.

I don't believe so. I work with a lot of teachers who are at or nearing their retirement age, but because of years they previously worked at Catholic schools they don't have enough time to retire with their full benefits since it doesn't count.

I worked in Catholic school for 3 years. No retirement. They did have a 403B.
And just like a PP mentioned, because I was 27 by the time I got a public school job on LI, I need to be over 55 in order to retire.

I've worked in Catholic School the last 9 years. They are not part of NYC Retirement plan.
They will ask how you feel about teaching religion & WHY you want to work in a Catholic School. They want to know you'll be there for the long haul & not just until a PS job comes up (just lie).
Also if it's elementary they want to hear you'll incorporate religion into everything you teach, not just at religion time (treating e/o how you want to be treated, saying a prayer when a friend returns from being sick, thinking about what Jesus would want us to do when we're arguing w/ a friend, etc.)
I don't get the medical benefits so nothing is taken out of my salary for it (the contribution) that is all.

DH interviewed at a Catholic school two years ago when he had first graduated -- the pay was so low that he didn't even consider it so I don't know much more than just that the pay is usually REALLY low. But a job is a job and it can help get your foot in the door if you can afford the salary. GL either way!!
