CAVAPOO DOG

I am considering getting a Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle mix) puppy.

I have allergies and we want to start a family really soon.

Does anyone know anything about those dogs? If so, are they nice little dogs (NOT hyper!).

TIA

Re: CAVAPOO DOG

I will get flamed, I am sure BUT

You are getting a dog that may not be hypo-allergenic. Since a Spaniel is not hypoallergenic ther is NO TRUE way to be 100% sure that the dogs produced will have the hair/fur of a poodle. If you want a pure-bred dog that is hypo-allergenic I would be more than happy to help you find the right breed, and a responsible rescue group or breeder.

Also, poodles can be nasty dogs, and if they are bred with toy poodles, they may not be good with children. Just because the "Spaniel" part is well tempered again does not guarantee that the dog will have the trait you want from each breed.

If you are considering starting a family soon I'd suggest waiting. Some breeds go through their "puppy phase" until they are 2 or almost 3 years old, and can be incredibly difficult if they are in puppy mode when you introduce a baby into the house.

Final point: any breeder selling these dogs is not a responsible breeder. Please know that only responsible breeders can give real health and blood-line guarantees though many years of responsible and selective breeding.

Re: CAVAPOO DOG

Thank you for your input.

We are still debating on the best dog for us. So, the cavapoo was one option.

So maybe you could help me indeed.

We both have allergies (me being worst!).

So we want a dog with the following criteria:

- we have a small house but a big yard
- small dog (15 to 22 Lbs)
- requires low maintenance (maybe once a month grooming)
- need to be good with young children/babies
- NOT HYPER or chewing type
- Trainable

TIA

I am totally biased but I have 2 Havanese and love them to pieces. They sound perfect for what you want. I have pics in my profile and avatar.

Havanese are small (12-15 pounds), hypoallergenic, nonshedding, very quiet and very sweet, smart dogs. They need only moderate exercise, and they are said to make good apartment dogs. We have ours professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks. They nip as puppies (all puppies do) but can be trained not too.

Good places for more info:

Please FM with ANY questions!!!!!!!!

Re: CAVAPOO DOG

My parents have a Bichon Frise and she is hypoalergenic (although she herself has terrible allergies), about 12 pounds, and very friendly. She can be hyper...but I think that's more of her personality and not the breed in particular because the neighbor's Bichon is very calm.

Good luck!

Please do your research. Many people purchase these "designer dogs" and realize they aren' for them. THen the dogs wind up in shelters.

Please listen to MBV's advice and wait. DOgs
require a lot of attention.

When you are ready a great place to start is Petfinders.com. Also consider adopting a dog that is already grown, fixed and house trained.

Good luck.

Re: CAVAPOO DOG

Thank you for all your good advices.

We both own dogs before so we know about the "work" involved.

I only owned pure breed German Shepperds and he had both large and medium dogs.

Our house is really too small to accomadate a large dog.

This is the reason why we are looking for a smaller breed.

Re: CAVAPOO DOG

I had a King Charles Cavailier Spaniel that passed away at 14 years old. She was the sweetest dog in the world. There isn't a bad thing I could say. She was perfect and I miss her vey much.

My dog is a shih tzu mix and he is the best dog ever. No shedding, we have him groomed every 8 weeks, he know a lot of tricks too. He is very well behaved... I was the one who traied him when I was 11 years oldChat Icon

Bishon's are very prone to having allergies something about the hair in the lining of their ear or ear canal. I know every spring my Mom's would tear his neck apart and have to have it cortatized. It was awful, they are also white so may require more maintance.

Thank you so much for your help!

I have been looking into the Havanese and (except the grooming Chat Icon ), it would meet our requirements.
