Cavities in 2 year old?
Has anyone's DC had a cavity at such an early age? My DS was saying that his mouth "stings" so I took him to a Ped dentist and he has 2 cativities! Upper back tooth, on each side. He said they probably didn't mineralize correctly while in the womb (that I might have had a fever, or from him being early, etc.), and it doesn't look like bad eating or brushing, at least. BUT, he has to get them filled this week. He recommended against being put under and said they use a harness for the little ones. My DH and I will both be with him, and he said it's only 15 minutes, but still. I don't want him to be tramatized. Anyone have any experience with this?

No experience but are they using anything to make the area numb?
I tried to go without anything when getting my cavity filled. I lasted about 2 seconds before the dentist had to give me a shot. I couldn't imagine it without anything for the pain

Re: Cavities in 2 year old?
No experience with cavities yet thank goodness, but DD did break a tooth a few months ago and I had to take her in for that.
We opted not to do anything since it would be too traumatic, but if there was a medical need, like in the case of the a cavity, I would do it and make sure they use something to numb him up.
Will they have to drill? Is there any chance then can put a sealant on it instead?
In any case, good luck

Re: Cavities in 2 year old?
Caiden who is almost 6 has 3 cavities. He basically inherited mommys bad teeth.
One of them is BIG and he even has to get a cap on it until it falls out. The other 2 are minor. They said they'll be giving him the funny gas and of course novacaine. I had the gas when I was little, which I loved, but it's not me, it's my son. He's also very scared. I wish he didn't have to get them taken care of because they're baby teeth, but what can you do? Mine are costing a fortune even with insurance.

Re: Cavities in 2 year old?
I hope I can make you feel a little better with my answer. Teeth that form with defected enamel(from high fevers etc) normally are more decay prone and tend to be sensitive(at least this tends to be my findings in 10 yrs of practice). Normally all the brushing and fluoride in the world won't make much of a difference. They definitely need treatment and sometimes this means holding a child down or giving them a little gas. If it was my own child I would try to do the work without putting the child under, if possible. I hope the treatment goes quick and smoothly. If you have any issues please don't hestitate to FM me

Re: Cavities in 2 year old?
Thank you all so much for responding. I checked with the Dentist, and he will be given a shot of novicane, and possibly some sweet air, depending on his mood.
OneofEach, that is exactly what the dentist said. We do not want to put him under, and the Ped dentist we went to doesn't recommend it in general. Also, my DS has a heart mummur, so it is not recommended. Thank you for your response.

Re: Cavities in 2 year old?
Do they have to give him novicane? My son had 3 cavaties fixed without any novacaine. As long as they aren't deep my ped dentist said there is no need. My son said he felt nothing.
