CDC - BMI Calculator for Child and Teen...crazy results!
So i found a link for this calculator in Parents Magazine:
CDC - BMI calculator for children
so I decided to measure my 5 yr old DD and my 3.5 yr old DS.
I was shocked by the results:
my DD was 95.5% and this is considered "OBESE" "contact your doctor".. I would be the first to say she is overweight...but I really don't think she is! But to make it into the OBESE category?!?!REally?!!? She has always been in the 95 percentile at the drs for BOTH height and weight! I go for her annual 5 yr check up next week and will definitely be talking to the dr about it!
THEN i do my son:
He was 1.5% he is considered underweight..."contact your doctor" WHAAAT?!?! He eats wonderfully! I dont know where he puts it! Definitely dont consider him at an unhealthy weight either!
so confused and upset by these results...and i usually don't care about what other people and statistics say...but to be so far either way on the charts is just crazy to me
My 5 yr DD is ...45 in and 53 lbs..... BMI: 18.4 My 3.5 yr DS is ...40.5 in and 32 lbs ..... BMI: 13.7

Don't panic. I honestly think the calculator is wrong. I just put my DD's information and it says she's obese. She is 2, weighs 25lbs and wears 12-18 and 18-24 clothes. She's not even chubby and is in the 25th percentile for weight, if that.

Are you sure you didn't do something wrong? I just did MY 5 yr old DD. She is 45.5 inches and 44.5lbs and this gave her a BMI of 15.1 and puts her in the 48th%. It said, "This child has a healthy weight."

I wouldn't put much stock in this calculator. Do you take your kids to well-visits with their pediatrician? Are they maintaining their curve? If there truly was an issue of over/under weight, your pediatrician would have alerted you at your last well check.

something is way off - with a BMI of 19.5, my son is considered obese?
he is 27 months, 36 inches and 33lbs and considered obese. Yah, I don't think so. he is perfect, wears a 3T top and 24m or 2T pants. Perfectly, normal - this calculator is out of whack!

yeah i agree..thats why i never do these things...now i am sorry i did!!! haha
she has always been 95 percentile for height and weight and always along that curve..but you know now at 5 yrs old - they only go yearly..so she hasn't gone for an official weigh-in since last summer! I go next week - she just turned 5!!
my dr has always said as long as they are on the scale and proportional whether on the bottom or on the top of the chart he is ok with it...it is just when they go off the charts that he begins to be concerned ... and both never have...

I really don't think you can get an accurate BMI on children this young. They really are still growing into their bodies. My DD has a huge pot belly yet she is considered on the smaller side of normal for weight. They don't have any muscle tone yet, etc I think as long as your Dr is ok with what they weigh, you shouldn't worry too much.

Re: CDC - BMI Calculator for Child and Teen...crazy results!
I'm not a fan of the BMI charts. In my Sr. year of HS, and throughout college, I was "overweight"..... I lifted weights a lot, participated in a lot of sports, rode my bike everywhere... I was very muscular, and extremely healthy, but according to the chart, I was overweight.
DC, especially DS, have a very similar body type to what I had when I was young. DS is going to be muscular, and hence, he'll be higher up on the chart than is "recommended"....
His Ped and I know better than a generic chart how healthy DC are. It may be OK as a guideline, but it's definitely not a definitive source of medical information.
