Celeb Obsession
why do you think people are SOOOOOOO into following everything celebs do, what they buy, what they wear, who they are dating or divorcing, etc?

Re: Celeb Obsession
i think people have really lost their sense of self (especially teenagers) and need reassurance/direction from others that are well liked and admired.

Re: Celeb Obsession
I love the gossip magazines and shows. My guess why the appeal is maybe because they live such extravagant lives nad it's almost comical to watch someone buy a $700 bra or a $300,000 car without even batting an eye. And because celebrities are usually for entertainment purposes (characters in movies or TV's shows, public speaking figures, etc ...) it's fun to see them be "human" and "out of character".

Re: Celeb Obsession
I think it's that we like to put celebs on a pedestal so we can knock them off to feel better about ourselves.
Did I mention that my marriage was longer than Brad Pitt & Jennifer Aniston's?

Or 25 of the best butts in hollywood
after a while it gets WAY TOO MUCH

It is a lot, but I think people choose to watch and read what they are interested. I may not want to watch the Top 25 butts of 2005, but may like the Top 25 hotties of 2005. You may not want to watch the Top 40 celebrity fights of all time, but maybe you are interested in the Top 100 celebrity opps of all time.
I mean as much as it is overload and overlapping, the shows are somehow all have a different spin. ETA: and I think people are watching so they are going to overload the TV with them. Same thing happend with Reality TV for a while too.

Re: Celeb Obsession
I have to say I watch those count downs and at first the draw is that you get to dream about what it would be like if YOU had that money.... it's like living somewhat vicariously through these celebs.
But after a weekend of non-stop "most luxurious" blah blah on E! or VH1, I get completely disgusted with them. Not just depressed, disgusted. It gets to the point where you hear about someone who buys a brand new pair of sneakers everyDAY and you can't help but think...geez, there are still starving children in other parts of the world and this is the best thing you can think of do with all that money?
And I like the shows, but they need to seriously back off on them a bit. It's bad for us and our kids to constantly see the way these celebs live, just squandering thousands of dollars away on garbage, to idolize their lifestyles. It fosters envy, selfishness, and materialistism (is that a word?).

Re: Celeb Obsession
I think a big part of why you notice it so much on NFR is that there is no where else to post it. There used to be a lot of Met/Yankee posts on NWR on LIW unitl they made the home team board or pet posts until they made the pet board.
As to why, I'm not into sports, could care less how much money A Rod is getting paid or what position he's playing next year, but like to hear what restaurants, clothes, jewelry are trendy. And to admit to being really petty, it makes me feel good that I'm happier and my relationship can outlast all these people who by all appearances should have really happy lives. They supposedly have it all, but they are all pretty unhappy people. Like I said, it's petty, but it makes me feel better about my "average" lifestyle and my "average" home.

I agree- I think that they think we want to see celebs up the wazoo.
Plus, it's also a form of escapism for a lot of people.
As for the celebs who do reality shows, I think it's a ploy to get in the public eye again. I think it's been unsuccessful more often than not.
