Celebrating 1st Bday on a Holiday

DD's bday is July 8th. Our only options for celebrating her 1st birthday are Friday, July 4th or Saturday, July 5th (which is also BIL's 1st wedding anniversary). I'm trying to avoid celebrating the same day as the wedding anniversary, but I'm wondering if people would mind having her party on the holiday. Its a Friday, but everyone would be off for the holiday, and we're planning a backyard party. Any opinions are appreciated.Chat Icon

I think it all depends on your close friends and family. I would love it. I am always looking for a nice backyard party so I think its a great idea. But if you close friends and family tend to go away or have other traditions on July 4th, then I may not.

Re: Celebrating 1st Bday on a Holiday

Ha!! DS2 is also July 8th. Funny thing is DS1 is May 28th so I have one around Memorial Day weekend and the other around 4th of July. LOL!
Let me tell you I do get some friends away around those times bc it's long holiday weekends. DS2 is only 2 so I only dealt with it twice. I did luck out his first bday was the day b4 his birthday.

I would try and do it the 5th, but it does depend on your friends and family you're inviting. My friends have kids the same age as my boys so right now they're not doing vacations away yet. We also are usually together for the 4th anyway. If you think they'll be around then do a 4th of July bday party theme. Fireworks, red, white and blue colors, etc. We did a luau theme for DS2's 1st birthday. Lots of stuff onsale and in the stores. Can't go wrong.
Just pray for nice weather.

It depends on your crowd. My niece has the same issue (born July 9). The first year we had the party July 4th but she got too many regrets as many friends and family go away that weekend so she tries to do it the following weekend.

Dd is born right around Presidents' Day next month. We were going to have a party that Saturday but after speaking to family and friends it seems many people are going away that weekend/week so we changed the date.

Celebrating 1st Bday on a Holiday

Im going to be honest I personally would never throw a party on any holiday weekend. I would never have had my wedding on a holiday weekend. BUT this is because I like to go away for holidays and so do most of my friends and family. And yes even now with kids. We have a summer home we go to.
To be honest I hate when people do it because it ruins my entire weekend. I don't mean this to be rude to you by any means that is not my intentions but I would consider your group of friends and family before doing that. If they are people that tend to go away or tend to have their own plans then I wouldn't do it.

I just feel people work hard and when they get a 3 day weekend its precious...

Celebrating 1st Bday on a Holiday

We wouldn't be doing it that weekend if we had any other options. Unfortunately, we have other family birthdays and weddings in the surrounding weekends. Since we've already had a wedding in our family that same weekend, I'm sure a lot of our guests wouldn't mind going to a birthday party. I completely understand about the 3-day weekend and a party "ruining" it, but I wouldn't be upset with anyone that chose their vacation over coming to a backyard birthday party. Thanks for you all of your opinions, I definitely have some deciding to do.

I personally am not a fan of holiday weekend birthday parties.

At the same time, if it were a good friend, we would stay in town to attend.

My DD's birthday is around a holiday, too. I always make her party that weekend. If people can't make it because they have other plans, I'm understanding, but I can't plan my life around everyone else. But I'd avoid doing it on the actual 4th of July if possible, because so many people host or go to parties on the actual day. What about Sunday the 6th?

I grew up with a set of twins who were friends and there bday was July 4th. We never cared that we celebrated on a holiday (even though it was also their bday). It always guaranteed us a party on that day lol.

Celebrating 1st Bday on a Holiday

My son is Sept 13th. I have no problem having everyone over for Labor Day/his birthday party. I keep parties small and always do them at home. No one in our families really go away and we all get together every weekend that time of year for BBQ's anyway. So, even if I don't do his party that weekend, everyone would be available the next weekend.

Re: Celebrating 1st Bday on a Holiday

I'm a December baby, as is my dd. Maybe I'm ultra sensitive with having my bday around a more major holiday, but I would come to resent it if my parents ever had my birthday mixed with a holiday celebration. I know Christmas and 4th of July are totally different so maybe I'm being a little much here, but IMO, a birthday deserves to be the only reason for the celebration. I personally would have it the weekend after. I would feel awful if my child looked at photos of her first bday and saw she had to "share" it on an occasion where family would get together anyways.

My mil is born ON July 4, btw, and even she communicated some disappointment that she never has a party just for her - it's always a BBQ for the 4th and "oh yeah, here's a cake. How convenient"

I thought about her (or even me) being upset that she was "sharing" a birthday with a holiday too. If I don't do it the 4th, she will be sharing it with the wedding anniversary on the 5th. And I can't do it the following two weekends because of weddings. I feel like the 4th is the lesser of all evils.

Even though it isn't her actual bday, I thought it would be fun to do a patriotic theme and since we don't have a set family gathering for the 4th this could start a new tradition. Like you said, it would be a guaranteed party for that dayChat Icon
