Re: Central A/C

Trish just recently asked too. I think it depends on exactly what you need done (vents, etc).
We had it done right before we moved in, but we replaced EVERYTHING Chat Icon

Yep, it was me!! Thanks for positng the link to the post Lisa!

Here's a little update from me:

It really depends on what type of house, and what type of system. We got quotes that ranged from $5000 to over $10,000. We already have the ductwork in place for heating, although not optimal for cooling (they are low on the wall instead of high).

We are not staying in our house house long term (maybe 5 more years?), but we wanted the central A/C. What we ended up doing was getting a brand new furnace, and with the 2-stage furnace, we are also having them put on the AC coil and condenser unit outside. The AC will run through the same ducts as the heating ducts (no as optimal, but works). We have a 36,000 Btu condenser unit, 15 Seer, and a 90,000 Btu furnace. It gets installed March 28th. If we decide to stay longer, we may have them install the air handler in the attic space and make ducts through the ceiling in each room (much more optimal for AC cooling).

The best thing we did is have about 5 different companies come in and pitch to us what they can do. we learned so much and made the best decision for us at this time.

Oh, we're spending just under $7000 for the new heating system and central AC.

Believe it or not, Sears. I never thought it when I called to just get an estimate, but DH knows someone in their Home Improvement Products Division, and we got 20% off and a nice rebate for getting the newest model condenser (a Carrier over the Kenmore). We also went with them once we decided to upgrade our furnace too... Had we just done AC, we would have probably gone with Slomins. Decisions, decisions!
