Cereal question..Update I'm an Idiot
DD is starting cereal today. Doctor said to begin with 1 tablespoon of cereal with 4oz of formula. My question is does this replace one of her bottles????
She gets 5 6oz bottles a day. So if we give her cereal 2x a day do I only give her 3 bottles now?
Or do I keep giving her all 5 bottles until day 4 when the ratio is 4 tbs to 4 oz of formula??
I am so confused
UPDATE It is 1 tablespoon to 1 tablespoon. I have no idea what I was thinking Thanks for all the advice. She basically looked at me like I had 5 heads and spit out most of it

Re: Cereal question
Really? 4 oz of formula is really WAY too much for 1 tbsp of rice cereal.
My doc said to make it the consistency of applesauce - which I found to be about 1 oz. of formula to 1 tbsp of cereal.

Thing is, you'll see when you try to mix it. Your DD will be DRINKING the cereal. You won't get to feed it to her w/ 4 oz.
But, to answer your question - if you do the 4 oz of formula - I would consider that her bottle as well. My doc always said that the formula you use w/ cereal "counts" as formula intake.
ETA: My DD HATED cereal at first ... so maybe my consistency was off ... what do I know?!

Re: Cereal question
I kind of play it by ear. Sometimes DS won't take the entire tablespoon of cereal and I have to give him some bottle before, then some after. Some days the cereal is fine for him. Some days I have to do half and half.

Re: Cereal question
We started cereal this week too. The first one the doctor said to make thin like milk - the 4tbl to 1 tbl cereal (same as what it says on the box). Each day make it a little thicker. The first one is thin to get them used to the taste and the spoon.
My doctor told me that this is not to replace a bottle.

Re: Cereal question
I was told that the bottle (formula/BM) is more important so I should feed the bottle first.
At this age the babies are getting use to eating from a spoon, they arent seeking nutrition from the cereal.
Eventually when she starts eating cereal more often you'll see her bottle intake to decrease

I totally see your point. I guess I will just see what she does and up the consistancy if it is too watery. Thanks for the advice.

Do you give the bottle right before cereal? or do you think I could try the cereal and then give her a bottle afterwards???

I would give RJ his 9am bottle like normal and then give the cereal like an hour later

Re: Cereal question
I think your ped might have meant 1tbsp of cereal to 4 tbsp of formula. Thats what we did a t first. Now I dont even pay attention to the ratio. I just put in 4tbsp of cereal and enough formula until its the consistancy I want.
Chris has been on cereal for about 1.5 months and he is still taking all 5 bottles. But they are just less, it was 5-6.5oz bottles but now I use approx 1oz in the cereal so 2 bottles are only about 5oz. My ped told me he would let us know if he didnt want the bottle or wanted less due to the cereal intake, so far no change and he eats fruit 2x a day now as well.
I give DS cereal with bottle #2 of the day, he gets cereal then the bottle, Bottle #3 he gets fruit/veggie( started at 5 months) and then a bottle bottle #5 he gets cereal, fruit/veggie and bottle. Feeding #1 and #4 are just formual

Re: Cereal question
1 tbsp to 4 oz of formula doesn't seem right to me. That is IMO way to soupy to even bother. And even now i don't give 4 tbspns with 4 oz of formula.
Something just doesn't seem right IMO.
We started with 2 tbspn with 2 oz We didn't even go up until much later
We did the rice for a week then went onto oatmeal, the fruits then veggies.
And no i didn't replace any bottles for the food. I just gave the bottle first, waited an hour or so then fed
