Re: CFBC....

In the event of death of my brother and his wife, I am legal guardian to their five children.

If someone trusted me enough to do it, then I would most likely say yes.

Re: CFBC....

For a family member, absolutely.

For a friend? It depends. If I felt a family member was better suited to the job, I would discuss that with my friend openly. I feel the kids need to be close to their extended families, so it would need to be someone I was close with. Still, if DH and I were their best option, we would certainly agree.

DH has no siblings.

Not sure about a friend's children. Their family should come first.

Re: CFBC....

My brother has no kids, but if/when he does I would be honored to care for his kids if he chose to ask me.

DH has a neice and nephew, but he is the youngest of his siblings and wasn't married until recently, so he isn't very high up on the list. He is on the list, however, and if all the events transpired to put us in that position, yes, we would also be honored to care for BIL's kids.

For friends....hmm, I think all our friends have strong, large, close families that they would be entrusting their kids to in the event of such a tragedy. Also, I don't know if I could make those sacrifices for any children other than those blood related to me of DH.

Same. If a friend asked, we would have to spend a lot of time discussing it first before coming to a decision.

We chose friends to be legal guardians should something happen to us over family members because they are the best choice for our kids.

Just because someone is family doesn't mean they are the best person for the job.

Re: CFBC....

For family -- in a heart beat, not even think about it.

For a friend -- I would want to know why no other family is being considered before us.

True, there are always exceptions to the rules.
One would have to look at whatever is the best for the child(ren).

Re: CFBC....

I hope this doesn't come off horribly insensitive, but it would really depend on the age of the children. My sister has a 3 and 9 year old, that I'm confident I would be able to handle if she were to ask me now. But if the little one were still an infant, I'm not sure if I would be capable of caring for her. It's sad to say that, but I know myself too well to know I'm not responsible/capable of taking care of a newborn.

Re: CFBC....

Definitely....DH's sister asked him to be when they had their first son and he said yes.

I would do it in a heartbeat, family or friend

If my brother had kids I guess I would; i'm not sure how good of a choice i'd be because i'm clueless about children. Seriously clueless.

I'd say no to a friend.

my bro did the same for his 3 kids...i was hurt at first, but when he explained he felt it would mean the least amount of change in the kid's lives i understood..they live down the block & go to the same chuch..so no change in schools, friends, etc...
However i did tell my bro I would take them in a heartbeat even though i always say I don't want any of my own.
A friend's kids...no...i would not.
