Change Heating Thermostat
Has anyone done this? I have a dial knob one and I think I want to replace with a digital (preferably programable) one.
Are these difficult to change out? Should I bring an expert in or is this something I can do on my own? TIA

We did this a year ago No it isn't hard and there are instructions on how to do it with the type you buy Just mark the wires

Re: Change Heating Thermostat
We bought two Lux programmable thermostats from Home Depot when we moved in. DH did it himself, he's good with that sort of thing, but there seemed to be pretty straight forward directions included for those who may not be.

I was just going to say that. We had the service done on our boiler and I asked the service man about that and said something about ours having a 120 volt or something and it would blow the programable digital ones out immediately. He said you could do it if you added some transformer thingy (don't you love my technical names for things ) and he went on to say a lot of the older ones like have work better than the digital ones which I didn't believe 100%. ANyways the point of my post was be careful if you do play around with it.

Re: Change Heating Thermostat
my dad did it for us and said even i could have done it (implying that it was really easy to do)...
just like the others have said, make sure whatever you buy is compatible with what you have. i took a picture of the wiring, sent it to my dad, and he was able to take it from there...

Re: Change Heating Thermostat
Yes, if you have an older system it will be high voltage and they are more difficult to find than the low voltage. I bought ours two weeks ago and saw a lot of low voltage at Lowes and Home Depot but not many high voltage.

Re: Change Heating Thermostat
My husband did it just before Thanksgiving. He said it was really easy and it didn't take a long time at all. I love the new digital one - especially programming it.

Re: Change Heating Thermostat
I personally never did it, but I heard from a couple of friends that it's easy. Just make sure you label each wire when you disconnect it from the existing unit.

Re: Change Heating Thermostat
We did it on our own and it is really easy. Just coil the existing wires arround a pencil so they do not drop down the wall and label them -our new system came with labels. It was about 45 for the new digital unit and took all of 15 minutes to install, but DH and I did it together.

Re: Change Heating Thermostat
Sooooooooooo Easy...I did it!!! I bought it at Lowe's for $40 and just followed the directions. It's great, I never have to worry about adjusting the heat unless someone comes over and complains that it's cold (my mom)!

Re: Change Heating Thermostat
We changed ours to digital as well. I don't think it's that hard. I think the instructions come with it. It's so much better that you can program the heat to go on and off!
