Changes to Jericho Tpke in Smithtown
I don't understand why they can't put one of those concrete dividers in the middle? Then people cannot physically cross the center.
I can't say I'm happy that they're changing it to one lane. I guess any kind of safety change will cut into those middle lanes though.
"The state Department of Transportation yesterday unveiled changes to a stretch of roadway in Smithtown where three teenagers were killed last year.
Officials said they hope the new configuration will slow drivers down.
The work on Jericho Turnpike, from Old Willets Path to Meadow Road, should be done by September, DOT representatives said.
The changes to the 1.3-mile roadway that cuts through Caleb Smith State Park are:
The two westbound lanes will merge into one lane. Eastbound will remain two lanes.
A median will be constructed on the eliminated westbound lane. That will increase the distance between oncoming traffic from 2 feet to 12 feet.
Rumble strips and stripes will be installed on the new median. When driven over, the stripes will be audible to drivers so they will be alerted if they drift toward oncoming traffic.
Speed limits will be changed - from 55 mph to 45 mph on the westbound lane and from 55 mph to 50 mph on the eastbound lanes.
A center-turn divider will be added closer to Meadow Road so cars can turn into businesses there, along with a new left-turn lane for entrance into the south side of the state park. Drivers now must stop in the left lane to make both turns.
Police will increase speed enforcement."

I hate Jericho Tpke from Syosset to Huntington and all the way to Commack too.
People don't get it that you just cannot use the left lane, stop and turn left to go to a store across the street. It's mostly a solid line which means no crossing. People still do it.

I don't really know what the reasoning was for this change. I guess maybe a concrete divider is more expensive or takes more time to put in?
I am not sure how I understand this will really make a difference.
As for the issue of Jericho from Syosset to Commack, they need to put in turning lanes. Its a poor design that was probably implemented when that stretch of Jericho didn't have much on it.

Re: Changes to Jericho Tpke in Smithtown
Making it a single lane won't help any. Actually, it will just cause more headaches. Is this a done deal or people can still oppose it?
Not sure if it will help, but I've already created a letter.....sending it on its way.
Why won't they consider installing a light at the Park entrance? And why won't they consider a concrete barrier? Just makes no sense. Their whole idea.
