Changing Bottle Nipple Question

DD is 2 months. She was using level 1 nipple (Born Free). She was not eating enough as per Doctor and was falling asleep and impossible to push to feed. She is not gaining enough they say. Dr. suggested changing nipple level to level 2 making it easier for her to get the formula out. He thinks that with the level 1 nipple, she is sucking and it is hard for her and taking a while to eat and gets too tired to keep eat she ended up drinking 5.5 oz last night when she was drinking 2-4 oz (more toward the 2 / 2.5 side) w/ Level 1 nipple. I hear many people say they never changed the nipple from Level 1 ever...anyone have experience w/ the different nipples?

It made the HUGEST difference for DS. I kept thinking he was not hungry because he was not drinking his bottle. As soon as a switched the nipple (we are now on level 4 at 11 months) he was a different baby. I HIGHLY recommend switching. It might take a few days for her to get use to the faster flow. Good luck!!!

Re: Changing Bottle Nipple Question

Yes thanks...I meant to say the 5.5 oz she drank last night was w/ level 2 nipple...mid night feeding was 3 oz and 7am feeding was 2 oz..but she also had her shots yesterday so midnight and this am she was cranky..etc..so that can be why she didn't drink that much..dr. also said to stretch her to eat every 3 hours..we were doing on demand..

Re: Changing Bottle Nipple Question

My DS is 13 weeks and we switched to the level 2 nipple about 2 weeks ago.

He was taking a really long time to drink 4 oz. He was doing fine with the size 1 nipple for a while, but I slowly noticed him slowing down with his drinking.

I switched to the level 2, and it took a couple of days for him to adjust. He dribbled a lot, and he was spitting up a bit more than normal at first. But now he's used to it.

We do have to burp him more frequently though, because he tends to be a piggy and will eat the whole bottle in one sitting if I let him.

Re: Changing Bottle Nipple Question

I changed to level 2 about that time I guess. I can say personally it was a life saver. AJ was suckling on it too hard and collapsing the nipple trying to get her formula out faster. We had to switch.

I think bottles/nipples must differ because I know we could NEVER have stayed at stage 1 for more than few months.

Re: Changing Bottle Nipple Question

We just switched to a Dr. Browns level 2 - even though I use Playtex Ventaires the Dr. Browns fit. Tommy was falling asleep every night on the bottle and was only drinking like 3 oz of an 8 oz bottle...now it goes much quicker and he is still drowsy usually but we get most of it down.
