Changing everything over to married name...

How do I change my certifications over?

also - I noticed my maiden name is down for my test coming up next week - I am getting my student with disabilities birth-2nd grade - once I pass the exam and apply for my certification, should I use my married name if everything is under my maiden name? Or do I use my maiden name? I'm so confused - what do I do?

should I call BOCES? Or call the state?

I would keep everything in your maiden name until you take the test and get the new certification. Then switch everything over. It makes things much easier.

So get the new cert under my maiden name, and then change it all over?

Also, is the process hard or time consuming?

if I get a new job, would it affect anything while waiting to change it all over?

Re: Changing everything over to married name...

if this test is for a new certificate, i would do it in your new name. that way you pay for your certifcate once... a $100.00. otherwise, it's $25.00 name change once you already have the certificate.

NYSED tracks you by your social security number, so it's not a big deal. you apply for your certificate on-line... SO EASY! go to nysed.gov and set up a teach on-line account and then go from there.

after i got married, i did a name change for one permanent certifcate i had under my maiden name.... $25.00. the other certificate was a provisional and I needed it converted to a permanent and put that one in my new name. $100.00 (my certificates were under the old guidelines, but i would assume it would be the same process for an initial certificate and/or for changing an initial certificate into a professional certificate.

HTH!

the name change process is time consuming but it honestly is no big deal.

Getting a new job wouldn't affect the change over. I just think it makes sense to be one person (one name) while searching rather than two.

Although the other poster makes a good point about costs of changeover.
