Changing the look of your bathroom

I've always admired the dark cherry wood bathroom cabinets and was wondering if we could change the look of our cabinets without buying a whole new vanity.

Is it possible to just sand down our original vanity and then restain it with a darker color?

Has anyone done this before?

I did this in an apartment. The cabinets were wood finished in a honey and I stained them a cherry. I didn't sand - only b/c there wasn't any kind of varnish on them - just washed them down first.

If it is actual wood (not veneers) you could definitely do this.

Or you could always paint it.

I see them do this on home shows all the time.
