Channel 7 teaser
Did anyone just see..."Thousands of NYC teachers may be laid off."
I can't find anything on their site.

Re: Channel 7 teaser
There is a chance that up to 15,000 DOE workers will be laid off. Some will be teachers- not sure how many. Part of me thinks that Joel Klein is being an alarmist; for example, people will retire and/or leave on their own accord. I don't know if that's been taken into consideration.
I found this info on Gotham Schools.

being the wife of a NYC teacher, I agree. Joel Klein is being an alarmist. I really think they would cut out certian things before they get rid of teachers. then I think the teachers that have been there forever will be bought out and the non tenured teachers would be let go, etc. I cannot believe they would just fire teachers .

At this time, I would not worry. I think there will be a HUGE stink if they seriously float the idea of laying off teachers. Before they do that, they need to cut back on all these tests, reconsider the need for BOTH Aris and Acuity, and stop spending millions on couriers.
Meanwhile, my school is getting new windows, to the tune of $6 million. So I'll have 40 kids in my class, but the windows will be new! (We could use the windows, but we don't NEED them.)

Re: Channel 7 teaser
I wouldn't worry ---lots of other jobs would need to be cut first, plus they would need to trim the millions they are spending on everything else (contracts with vendors, interim testing, professional development, the press office, ARIS, acuity, I'm sure they can trim the accountability office etc. Managerial positions may be cut first.
If they are really desperate I'm sure that will not hire next year (let the ATR fill positions), not take in Teaching Fellows, and encourage people to retire!
