Charlie Horse - Leg Cramp

What a night I had. I was coughing like crazy last night, so instead of keeping Danielle awake I decided to go downstairs and sleep on the couch. At 5am this morning, I awoke to a Sharp pain in my calf. A Charlie Horse. WOW what Pain. I have not gotten one of those pains this bad in two years.

It is now 8:30, and I still really cannot walk on the leg. Of course it is the right leg. The driving leg.

I had the heating pad on it for a bit, and now I have an icy hot pad on it. God that hurts.

Can I put ICe on it or is heat better?

Scott

Re: Charlie Horse - Leg Cramp

When I was pregnant and would get those, massaging it out helped a lot.

I have had them a few times and was warned when I got pregnant that I would get them. What works for me is as soon as I feel it I tilt/point my toes up towards my heart. It stops the immediate pain and I massage my leg for the residual pain.

It's one of the most painful things I have experienced. Sorry that you had to deal with it last night.

Well, I've always gone by the rule of ice the first 24 hours of an "iinjury". (Due to inflammation), then heat, but for a charlie horse, the icy hot may be good to relax the cramping muscles.

Your best bet right now is gently stretching the calf musclles, "bring your toes to your nose" is the best way to explain it, so don't point your toes, that will just cramp the calf more, instead, extend them, get me?
Do that the next time a cramp happens at night too.
Feel better!

ETA: Also, eat kiwis!!! LOADED with potassium.Chat Icon

I get them...I eat a banana and make sure you drink lots of water.

Its a sign of dehydration and low potassium

Does Atkins have a book/website that can give you some potassium-rich foods that are allowed on their diet?
