Check out this house we almost bought back in the day

We saw this house - it was built by a builder - and when we saw it there was nothing installed yet - just the basic shell and walls were up. They were asking 495K - This IS my dream house if I could draw it up myself. THE CATCH WAS ----- A train literally runs through the backyard.

At the time I didn't care and wanted it anyway - but my family talked me out of it and made me realize that I really don't want to live on top of a train track.

Well - a year and a half later - the person who bought it is now trying to sell it for MUCH more. They originally listed it for OVER 600K. IT SITS ON THE TRAIN TRACKS!!! Can you imagine?

I just wanted you all to see how pretty it is. I still love the house - just not the location!

Gorgeous house! But I could never live with the shaking from a train that close! Good thing you didn't buy it!

The train also lets loose with the siren where the road meets the tracks, just down the block. That's got to be tough!

I know - these were all the things my family said to talk me out of buying it. I was devastated though. It's like someone took my dream house - dangled it in front of me - and I couldn't get it.

Thanks for fixing the link!! Chat Icon

We actually thought the taxes would be around 15K since it was new construction.

I agree! There are plenty of colonials in many areas, with lot lower taxes. We just bought one!

I know - but unfortunately the taxes aren't that much higher than what we are paying now. Nassau taxes stink!!!!

Re: Check out this house we almost bought back in the day

I wanted to be at least 1/2 mile from any train tracks. When growing up, I remember talking to a friend who lived about .5-1 block from the crossing and I could hear the train crystal clear on the phone. That memory sticks out in my memory!

Just b/c they are listing it for $600K doesn't mean they will get it.

Is the house off of Fairview or Hampshire?

Honestly I live right behind the train tracks and after about a week you don't even notice it. Hearing the kids upstairs right above my head is much more annoying than the train!! Chat Icon

nice house, but I would never consider buying a house on a main road or that close to train tracks Chat Icon

Re: Check out this house we almost bought back in the day

My rational at the time was that my aunt and uncle live in a gorgeous house in garden city that is across the street from the train tracks - and honestly - we are so used to them now we never hear them.

BUT - the fact that the train went through the backyard - well that was the deal breaker for us.
