childrens benadryl on a 5 hour flight pleasevote

I know this prob was disussed before but Im going away on tuesday with my almost 1 yrs old on my lap:Chat Icon Im nervous as heck about how Im going to keep him under control on the plane- many people have suggessted to me giving him benadryl- first off I have never given him that before and Im not one to give medicine at all I hardly ever give tylenol or those mylicon drops- I could probably count the amount of times on one hand in this whole year. That being said many people have said that benadryl helps them big time to relax and sleep. Im still unsure plus I dont even know how much to give him the dosage isnt on the package it says to call a dr which makes me nervous also becuase I dont know what to say to the dr-

"Hi Im thinking of giving my child benadryl for no real medical reason other than a flight? " I feel awkward about calling Chat Icon

i haven't been in this predicment yet, but I am like you, I don't give or take meds unless it's a total last resort.

I wouldn't give it, just so he is more relaxed, I wouldn't be comfy giving gianna meds if she has no symptoms the meds would treat

I'm not a fan of drugging a kid for a flight - but in this case I'd say absolutlely not. Some children have the opposite reaction to Benedryl - it can make them more hyper.

If you really need to do it, I'd suggest giving it to him before that day so you know if it will make him drowsy.

Is there anyway that his nap time can coincide with the flight? I agree with Barb that sometimes it can have the oppisite effect plus he is still so little. I hope the flight goes wellChat Icon

Miranda has taken Benadryl for being sick and it does nothing in the sleep deparment so I personally wouldn't give it to her because I knew it wouldn't help.
We've flown twice with her now and she's done fine. Both were 3-4 hour flights. Just bring toys and books and try to keep him busy.

This is absolutely true that Benadryl can have the opposite effect on kids and that IF you are going to give it, try before the day of the flight. As far as dosing, you can ask your ped. Or, often what is done is to use half of the dose recommended for 2 year olds. Personally, I would not use Benadryl for this, as it can also sometimes depress a baby's breathing. If it were being used for a truly therapeutic reason, that's one thing, but to make them sleepy, I would not risk it. I agree with trying to nap them during the flight.

What I would do would be to play with him so much just before you leave for the airport and at the airport that he gets really tired and hopefully will sleep a lot during the flight.

This doesn't sound cruel does it?
