Childs weight

I took my dd for her 4 year old well visit.
I was a little shocked.
DD to me is string beanish....especially her lower half. She carries more like my dh broader upper body, skinny lower half.
Her stats came up 39' and 39 pounds.
Dr said to watch bc she is at the 100th percentile for weight. i was like...what?!?! No really, how could that be? He said bc her height doesnt match her weight. The kid is 4 yrs old wearing a 4t...how the heck could she be overweight? He said to cut her juices and it will come off. But what? Really? How much should she weigh? Do you think maybe he plugged in 49 pounds into the comp. vs 39 pounds?
Is there an online chart for this?Chat Icon

Same thing happened with Jaidy because she is so short. Jaidy still wears 3T and some 2T stuff too. She was 4 in November.

Re: Childs weight

I don't put too much stock in 'percentiles' to be honest. Make sure they eat mostly healthy and get lots of exercise. Some kids are just naturally heavier - bigger bone structure or whatever. And some kids are just littler. Your daughter is perfect.Chat Icon

Re: Childs weight

wow! Leah is 40 pounds and wearing 4T also! Then again, I haven't had her in for her 4 year appointment, but it sounds like she is on par with Gilly. I don't think Gilly has a weight issue AT ALL!

I know! ANd I agree Gillian has been neck and neck with leah and her 4 yr old cousin as well. None of them are overweight so I cant imagine where these figures came from..Chat Icon

Re: Childs weight

Aly is 4.5. She is 34 lbs. 40 inches. I believe at her 4 yr old visit she was 85% height and 50% weight. She wears a 5t - for height reasons.

Based on Alys percentages the Dr is probably straight on. If she was 50% at 34 pounds and Gilly is 39, ya have to assume that Gillian is at 100%.Chat Icon

Re: Childs weight

Wow, she sounds perfect.

At DD's 3 year visit she was 40 inches & 38 lbs & he said she was 97th in both, but fine. Her BMI was okay also.

She's in 4T's & some 5's. She is bigger boned though too.

Re: Childs weight

According to those charts, Ava is overweight and if anyone's seen my kid, she's so skinny you can see her ribs. She weighs 54lbs and is 53 inches, I think? she's so big for her age. I was REALLY upset when I looked at her stats and it said she was overweight, but my ped. never said anything about it.Chat Icon

Re: Childs weight

I have a very big 2.5 year old. She is exactly the same 39lbs 39 inchs. She is off the charts for her age group but the Dr told me that she is fine because her height and weight are on the same curve. But she IS only 2 and 1/2 IDK?

DS#2 at his 3 y well visit was 42" and 47 pounds! 6 months later he has to be in the 50# range.

ped was actually not too upset about this. We have been monitoring his weight since 1 yo and he was 2 standard deviations over average = obese. Ped was satisfied that he actually went down a little on the curve. so it's all perspective.

I do think that a lot of this weight talk from peds comes from the AAP

I think Lance is 45lbs, 47" or something close to that. He's always been in the 95th percentile for height and weight. He's 4 years old, athletic build, wearing a size 7/8 shirt and 5/6 pants. (not chubby at all)

I would not worry about that height/weight. Chat Icon

Re: Childs weight

The problem (one of the problems....) with those charts is that they look at height and weight individually. If your DC is at 100% for their age, and 100% for weight for their age, they are probably perfect for their combined height and weight.

When you take height and weight as a pair, and don't worry about the age, they should be roughly 1lb per inch. Some DC are shorter or taller than their agemates, but as long as they are proportionate, they are fine.
