China's ban should surprise no one. China has banned many, many web sites. When I was last there in 2007, I could get onto very few web sites and no social networking sites.
I don't use Facebook or Twitter, but if they banned any web site in the US (aside from ones with clearly illegal content), I would be lobbying my legislators ASAP.

They've also blocked nytimes and flickr, certain key words like Tibet, and enforce time limits on playing online games like World of Warcraft.
If that happened here, I'd be writing an awful lot of protest letters.
