Choosing Godparents

My DH and I have started to discuss who we want to ask to be godparents once the baby is born. This is pretty hard!

1) What kind of qualities are you looking for/looked for in a godparent?

2) What are your expectations of the godparents?

Please share your thoughts.

Re: Choosing Godparents

We haven't really discussed godparents just yet...I'm torn between 2 choices for godmother. I have no idea who DH wants for godfather.

I don't have any real expectations. For me it's more of a title than anything, because likely the godparent will be someone who is already related to me, and be in the child's life regardless.

I just expect they will attend the baptism and be someone who my child knows is their godparent for years to come.

Re: Choosing Godparents

DH and I have been going back & forth with this as well, we want a relative, and someone who with be in the little ones life.

For us it's a hard decision because of the options we have so we are still up in the air but leaning more towards two people.

1) values. Need to have the values I want AJ to have. In other words be people I can see as good mentors to her in the future. Not only in religion but life.

2) mentoring. as said above. Be involved THROUGHOUT her life and not just an honorary position.

AJ's god parents are my husband's step-aunt/uncle. They are Jewish. I am agnostic and Jim is a non practicing christian. But I like their core values. They are invovled with AJ as much as they can be long distance. I debate with him often and we see these debates as learning. He's a great man and she's a kind woman. I am glad they accept her as a god child, even without any formal ceremony. I trust them that in my absence they would lead her down a path that I would choose myself.

Re: Choosing Godparents

In our family godparents are very important part of a child's life, so our decision is something we have put a lot of thought and consideration into.

To answer your questions...
1. What did we look for? Someone who is family oriented and loves us and will love our child even more. We chose two people who were very special to us.

2. My expectations would be that the godparents would take time to do special things with DS. Our family is so big that its hard for anyone to really get special attention, so the godparents are really the ones who spoil the kids and spend a little extra time with them.

I feel the same way for the same reasons...

I am having a tough time picking Godparents for DC#2 . Our son's Godparents are VERY involved, always there for him, takes time to see and spend time with him, are also very strong couple that loves DS like their own child. They also share the same values when it comes to family and God.
