Choosing one job over another...anyone want to help me?>

Ok..so I'm off for the summer from the church preschool and I get a PT job at a consignment store that is nearby and pays off the books. She says in the fall, she'd like me to come on FT. Here are my pros and cons:

PreSchool
Pros: LOVE the people I work with, during certain functions-free food
Cons: it's going to ba about a 45 minute drive one way, 5 days a week-not fun for a PG lady and it's more rigid when it comes to DR appt's-I'd have to make them all in the afternoon, no space for the baby to come to work until it's a year old-I'd have to pay for a sitter/daycare while I work

PAY: $40 a Day....probably around $360 each paycheck BI WEEKLY

Store
PROS:, it's 10 miles from the house, she super nice and flexible, we get first dibs on all the merchandise brought in to be sold (not bad-she gets ALOT of kids stuff), she said when the baby comes-she'll make room in the office to put a portable crip so my baby can come to work with me!!
CONS: it's just her, not a web of socializing

PAY: $5.50 an hour TO START OFF THE BOOKS

I think it's more money to work at the store OFF the books plus the $$ I'd be saving in gas and wear and tear on the car.

If I had that choice right now, I would choose the consignment store. You will be able to have your baby there, nothing beats that.

I'd choose the store. It sounds like a better fit for a pregnant lady

I'd choose the store. She sounds like a super nice lady and very accomodating, which will be great when the baby arrives. And that is soo super sweet that she is willing to make room for a crib so the baby can come to work with you, which will save on a sitter or daycare!!

So far the store sounds better but wait till you work there for a few weeks and then decide if it's a place you'd like to stay.

I'd choose the store...you can meet people who come in to buy! It seems to meet your needs better.

I definately agree. JMO, but taking care of your baby yourself is a lot more valueable (sp?) than having somebody at a daycare center take care of them.

The store sounds much better but I would see how much I like it for a few weeks before ruling out the other one. Good luck!

I would see how it goes over the summer in the store.

If you like it, I would take it so you can be with baby!

I swore that after I had my son I was born I was going to return to work and I just couldn't do it - the moment you see that little face you will want to spend every minute with him/her.

I would see how it goes. I personally hated working retail and would never do it again. It sounds like with the preschool job, there may be more of a future and better experience to have under your belt, but I don't know if that's what you are looking for.

this is an option since the baby can then go into the 1 year old room at the school (or any school)

DH thinks having the option to bring the baby is great, plus he's in retail so his days off are usually during the week, which is 2 days I wouldn't have to bring baby, plus SIL might watch the baby 1 day, and if I make some friends in our area, they might do it too.

It's also ALOT closer which saves on gas and time for me...I hate driving long distances-I fall asleep.

And thanks BabyAVocado for the concern with being in retai-I was in it too for a long time, and big corporate places I'll never do again-this is so darn easy it's scary. Plus she's a widow and I like the fact that I'm helping someone in need.

I think I would choose the store. Your baby will be right there with you and any job thats flexible is great.
Not only are you saving on gas but you are saving a lot of $$ on child care.Chat Icon
