i heard the same...and then I asked around, everyone was giving cash or checks, so we did too

I would give cash - that way the parents can put it where they would like to - like a 529 plan. Savings Bonds take way to long to mature - up to 15 -20 years in some cases.

I always give bonds too. It's funny because I got them from my own christening and just cashed some out last year when I turned 30 and they had matured. It was good for some $ for the new house.

I know, it's so conflicting too. I heard that bonds are no longer the present to give when I attempted to get one for someone...I figured it was safe to give a check...
