CIO while away from home advice needed!!

DD just turned one. We use CIO here when we know she's tired but just mad that she has to go to bed. We haven't been away with her for many many months where we had to use the PNP. She sleeps at my mothers just fine in a crib there, but she is there 3 days a week while I work.

We went to BIL's this weekend. She has a little cold so I did except her to get up once or twice but it was a DISASTER. This is a two part question:

1. Do you use CIO even in a foreign place, when it seems like she might have been scared and out of sorts? I had to after a while because every time we put her down she lost it. It actually worked but I felt terrible.

2. What do you do when you are sharing a room with your DC? We had to leave the room every time she woke up because if we laid her down she would stand right up and she was pretty much face level with me. I tried playing dead Chat Icon but she just got more hysterical. We felt SO bad. We kept having to leave the room everytime she got up with a cough or something crying and would try to sneak back in thinking she was asleep but she would just be laying there getting ready to give up but would see us and we were at square one again. We even resorted to bringing her in the bed but she never slept in the bed with us before, only comes in to play so she was very confused and thought it was time to get up and play.

So, do you have any advice on CIO or getting a baby to sleep in a new place and what do you suggest to do when a baby wakes up when you are sharing a room and can't make yourself not visible?

Thanks!

Re: CIO while away from home advice needed!!

Well, we have always done CIO with Ava since she was 8 months old. Rarely do we still need to have her CIO, but when we are away and in a foreign place, no, we definitely do not have her CIO. We were in Florida last month for a week and she was so thrown off that we just let her sleep in bed with us, which never, ever happens at home, not even when she's sick. When we got home, it was one night of CIO and then back to business as usual.
Before that, we were in Philly overnight and to avoid having to lug the pnp, she just slept in our bed and didn't skip a beat when we got home.
I'm a fan of doing whatever works when you are away and whatever makes it easiest on you.
That being said, I have a daughter who's extremely flexible and can stay up hours past her bedtime with little to no repurcussions in terms of her schedule. HTH

I wouldn't let her cio in a strange place, and never when she is sick.. If she is up because she is coughing and not feeling well then I would go to her. Chat Icon Good luck!

Thanks. It was terrible, my heart was breaking. I didn't know what to do. What do we do though, just stay up with her? She won't sleep in the bed with us, we tried. And she would fall asleep in DH's arms and then as soon as he'd try to put her down she was hysterical again. I felt stuck. DH was ready to just drive home in the middle of the night but he came to his senses. She ended up crying, with us there and just laying down eventually and woke up at her usual time, 7am.

What do you do when you are willing to do whatever works, but nothing works?

Well, if she fell asleep in DH's arms, then I would just have had DH hold her all night. That's what we did in Florida because, let's face it, my daughter is never going to be the one to lay down inbetween my hubby and me and just fall asleep. She, too, thought it was playtime. But he would rock her to sleep and then 20 minutes later, he'd lay down with her on his chest. After an hour, he'd slide her inbetween us and she was fine all night.

Must be in the nameChat Icon . I will do that next month at MIL's. Guess I should just tell DH to prepare for an early bedtime. Thanks! For once I had no solutions and it was driving me nuts!

Oh boy, it's DEFINITELY in the nameChat Icon It's almost as if all Avas in the world are somehow on the same wavelengthChat Icon
I would keep her up later than her usual bedtime next time and when you are ready to go to bed, then start with the whole rocking thing. Ava went to bed around 10:30-11:00 everynight we were away because neither of us were tired at 7:30 and we'd go crazy if we tried to sleep at that time.
Also, once she was asleep, we were able to turn the tv on and watch television until we were tired.
