CIO......UPDATE!!!!

anyone do this at night? Anyway if you did how did you do it without waking up the other??

Matthew keeps waking up at 3:30-4am evry night and he WANTS a bottle. Will drink it go right back down, but a friend told me that it is a bad habit and he should be sleeping through.
But how do I do it without waking Christopher??

Re: CIO......

I had this problem last night. They were both screaming. I just held it out. It took about 10-20min. But, eventually they both fell asleep.

A friend told me that they do not need a bottle during the night. Let me tell you... Alanna can cry it out from about 11 to 3. How do you know when its too long?

I would still let him CIO even if the other wakes up, they will both go back to sleep. My one son has to be flipping out for the other to wake up in the middle of the night, and they only flip when something is really wrong.

I agree... I used to run to the crying one to avoid waking the other, but eventually ended up having to let them CIO anyway! Comfort him and see how it goes... good luck! Its a hard thing to do I know....Chat Icon

I have tried......he doesnt like the pacifier.
I have been told to let him cry, but if he wakes Christopher....then he will cry up a storm and there is no stopping him.
Christopher usually wakes up at 5:30-6 am for a bottle, is that an ok time??

I may have to wait when DH is away in 2 weeks, or wait for my April break, because I cant do this and go to work.

Re: CIO......

Its such a tough situation because they are so young! Im not really good at sticking to the rules so Im not sure I am the best person for advice... I would think a 6 am bottle would be a good time! Majen had great sucess getting her boys to sleep at night...I bet she could share some words of wisdom!

Re: CIO......

Happened to us last night. Jack woke up around 4AM crying and just went on and on. I usually wait at least 10 minutes before going in and he rarely wakes Kevin. However he woke Kevin up but kevin just started talking. I finally went in but DID NOT pick up Jack and rubbed his back and head. That seemed to do the trick. I never even acknowledged Kevin for fear he would want to be held. Got them both back to sleep till 7AM.

I am a big fan of CIO...especially for mom's with multiples. I started very early (4 months - which trust me i know is not what they tell you to do) with my boys and it has worked for us. At first my DH had an issue with letting it go on too long and he would get up to sooth them, but that quickly stopped when he noticed that the more he did that the more htey cried throughout the night. It's not for everyone but it really has worked for us and most night the boys sleep 12 hours through the night without a peep.

Re: CIO......

We just started CIO this week with James. We were running in every time he made a noise and giving him the paci so he wouldnt wake up Kelly. We found that now he cries for about 5 mins, then gives up and goes back to sleep. Luckily, he hasnt woken her yet. Although it seriously breaks my heart to hear him crying.

We've had to separate them for nap times though because he's keeping her up.

Have you read this book?

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child

Its become like the bible around here.

Us too, DD was waking up at 2:30 every morning - I was so afraid of waking DS I would run to her and give her a bottle.
Lesson learned - she didn't need the bottle, she just didn't know how to put herself back to sleep -
We just let her CIO and if she woke up DS he would cry also, only lasted a few minutes though.
But the reward is far greater - they are both sleeping thru the night now.

Re: CIO......

I'm glad you got the book b/c it's really helped me and is the bible around this way too (as Pinky noted!). I definitely don't think he needs the bottle - it's just a soothing/comforting feeling that he's used to. If he doesn't want the pacifier have you tried a rattle or some little toy to keep with him? I give my boys this little plush rattle that they hug and grab. Do you have a mobile? That's worked for us too.

A couple of weeks ago we were having a waker around 4am... I would wait 5 minutes and then I'd go inside to give a pacifier. The next night I'd wait 7 minutes (books I've read said go from 5 to 10 but that seemed so long). Within 3 days or so, they snapped out of it and now when they cry it's a whimper and done (fingers crossed). The boys are used to one another's cries and unless they too are unhappy, they don't usually wake up the other. The other one is usually sleeping soundly which is ironic.

The book bascially says that you don't want to initiate or prolong bad habits (even that of giving a pacifier) in the middle of the night. The babies need to learn to soothe themselves and can do it if you give them the support and scaffolding they need. ... they begin to rely on the pacifier or your soothing less and less, they become more independent. HTH

Oh! Almost forgot... are they on a regular napping schedule? My boys sleep overnight has become more peaceful and consistent ever since I got them on a nap routine during the day.

Not sure if it is teething or what.
I do have a mobile, but they are belly sleepers and dont see it, and I have the crib aquarium and tht sometimes helps him.
Yes, they are on a regular nap schedule and he always naps around the same times. Onec in the morning after breakfeast and then in the afternoon around noon or 1 pm and then again after dinner...for like a half hour, then it is his lasy bottle around 8;30-9pm

Re: CIO......

What i do is let them cry it out. My girls are used to the other one crying. I never take them out of the crib durning the night. I used to and as soon as i picked Syd up (usually her) she would stop crying thats how i new nothing was really wrong with her. Try to break him of the habit of taking a bottle in the middle of the night. Once he gets that out of his system he will sleep better. I know it's hard because you just want to sleep but try to tune it out.Chat Icon
