Civil Service tests/Jobs
What happens after you take the test? Do you continue on to meet for an interview? Are you offered the job if your a top scorer? I never understood this.
Thanks!

Re: Civil Service tests/Jobs
You have to wait for them to grade it, which can take awhile. I took one and didn't get my score until a almost a year later.
Then you get your score, and when they are ready to hire they mail out letters asking if you are interested in setting up an interview.
You go in for an interview and depending on your score, they may or may not reach you on the list. They have to go in order of the list, but I think they are allowed to skip one (like they can hire 1, 3, and 4 if they didn't like 2.
Even if you don't get hired or pass on the interview, they keep you on the list.
I took the test in 2002 and still get letters periodically to go in for an interview if I want to. Hope this helps!

exactly how it was explained to me!
a friend of mine took a few CS exams. She now works for a school district and it took almost a year from the time she took the exam until hired. I'm taking one in November.

Re: Civil Service tests/Jobs
after i took the Police Officer exam (back in '98)...when the results came in about 8 weeks later, I was getting letter/phone calls on a weekly basis trying to get me in for an interview (my list # was 615 out of 20,000)...but at that point i had decided that the NYPD was not for me (personal reasons)..they continuted to call and tried to get me to come in for interviews.
i recently sent in the application for Court Officer...i think the exam is either this month, or december, not sure...

Re: Civil Service tests/Jobs
Yes the time it takes to get back test results varies completely with the test and the amount of people who take it.
Yes they should go in order of highest score but that isn't the case all of the time. Lists can and are often broken to get the person they like

I took the court officer test a while back and did good too, but when they sent me paperwork to go for physicals and all the specifics of the job, the reality of having to carry a gun hit me and I could never do it. I joked that I would just buy a good looking water gun to carry!! Good Luck!!
