Classic Books

Can you name some books that you think are classics. Ones that you feel everyone should read. Thanks

Re: Classic Books

As a high school English teacher, I am biased. This is off the top of my head...
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Great Gatsby
The Catcher in the Rye
Hamlet

Last year I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for the first time and I absolutely think it's a classic. I also have several modern books I think could be added to the "canon," such as Their Eyes Were Watching God, A Lesson Before Dying, The Color Purple, The Joy Luck Club.

I'm sure I'll come back to add more!

Re: Classic Books

For some reason I hated Catcher in the Rye. Chat Icon I think because everyone pressured me to read it and enjoy it so much. This was maybe 3 years ago? I was never assigned to read it in HS.

I loved To Kill a Mockingbird- still one of my all time favorites.

A few others are The Outsiders, Go Ask Alice, Brave New World, The Hobbit, and Animal Farm.

I also have never read Watership Down (another one we were never assigned in HS!) but I really want to read it. Rewatching Lost from the beginning reminded me. Chat Icon

ETA: And maybe I'm a nerd, but I think everyone should read the Harry Potter series. I just loved those books so much.

I agree - To Kill A Mockingbird is a definite classic! One of my all time favorites!

I also love The Great Gatsby and Shoeless Joe.
