Clothes for fall & winter - how many of each?

I shopped all the sales as I found them (Gap, Childrens Place, and Kohls) and I got DS' fall/winter wardrobe for a steal... but I think I bought more than what he actually needs.

Off the top of my head, I bought:

Tops:
6 long sleeve thermals (half solid, half striped)
2 striped short sleeve polos (to wear with a long sleeve shirt under)
4 long sleeve layered-look t shirts
2 fleece half zip sweaters

Bottoms (wayyyyyyyy too many - what should I keep?):
3 lined mesh pants - brown, black, navy
4 swishy type casual pants - brown, beige, navy
4 fleece side-stripe pants (not gathered bottoms) - light grey, charcoal, black, navy
2 fleece solid color cuffed pants (navy and dark grey)
2 cargo pants (navy and grey)
3 utility pants (brown, beige, navy)
3 jeans (different styles and washes)

Shoes:
1 navy mesh Striderite sneaker
1 grey leather Children's Place sneaker
1 brown with suede CP sneaker

Outerwear:
1 navy zipper hooded Gap jacket for Fall
1 brown houndstooth Gap jacket for Fall
2 ON puffy winter coats (I got these on clearance last year)

What should I return? Am I missing anything for him? I guess I need onesies for under his clothes and possibly new socks.

ETA: DS is 17 months now. I bought him the next size up for his fall/winter clothes (size 24 months). He does not go to daycare. My MIL does watch him 3x per week, but he's the only child and they don't really go out or anything. We do laundry about 1x per week for him. Usually when we run out of clean pj's Chat Icon

Re: Clothes for fall & winter - how many of each?

How old is your DC and how often do you do laundry? Is he/she prone to changing clothes 1x or 2x a day? And does your DC go to daycare?

These questions should help gauge how much you get.

Daycares usually prefer to dress your child in play clothes so I find that alot of the nicer stuff I get DS like dress shirts, bottoms and jackets don't get worn. Since he outgrows them so quickly at this age, the dressy stuff probably gets 5 wears at most.

I usually have about 10 tops and 10 bottoms for DS at any given time and 1-2 two comfy jackets and 2 pairs of shoes he wears on a regular basis. But then again I'm a minimalist...

If you do want to return anything, maybe some of the pants and 1 jacket?

Looks good. I would also get a couple of sweatshirts for fall.

I actually haven't seen any yet (unless I missed them at Gap, CP, and Kohls). I did get him two of these:

Haha ok you made me feel better! What size did you get him?

DS is wearing 18 months now and everything I bought for fall/winter is 24 months.

Most of the stuff I got on sale with additional coupons - $4-6 for almost every item! Jeans were $7.50 at TCP! Sneakers and jackets were more.

Re: Clothes for fall & winter - how many of each?

I don't really buy him a lot. right now, I think he has 8 long sleeves (henley, button downs, polos) 4 pairs of jeans and four pairs of knock around pants.

I am planning to add to this a package of long-sleeved onesies for layering, a good heavy weight sweater, a puffy vest and a pair or 2 of cotton sweats.

I have 2 new pairs of long sleeved pjs and I plan on buying 6 more pairs.

he'll get waterproof boats, a pair of nice brown fall shoes and maybe another pair of sneakers.

we have two snowsuits for him and a long sleeved heavy fleece full zip.

I will probably buy him another hat or two and another pair of gloves.

socks.

done.

keep in mind also that I buy for two households, b/c I keep a few sets of clothes at our house upstate. I would buy less if that was not the case.

my MIL does his laundry during the week and she does it often though.

ETA: I think you have way too many pants. you won't use them.

and do you have snow suit pants? maybe make a trade for them if you dont

also, what is the diff between cargo and utility pants Chat Icon

what are swishy pants? and 6 pairs of fleece? you can cut that in half!

I agree, too many pants! lol. I just didn't know what to keep and what not. I do have to get him snow pants (or like the overall snow pants!)

Here are the pants you asked about:
Cargo Pants

Utility Pants (I didn't know what to call them, so I used the name from online, lol)

Swishy pants (online they're called microfiber pants)

and these are the two types of fleece pants I bought him:

and for good measure, these are the mesh pants I got him

DD is starting kindergarten. I am now up to 8 outfits, 1 pair of sneakers, 1 pair of shoes, and immitation uggs. I am done with clothes. My mil wants to get her a few outfits though. She still has clothes from last year that fit so not going too crazy.

Re: Clothes for fall & winter - how many of each?

I do laundry very often, so all I bought for Amelia (who is almost 2) is 10 shirts and 6 pants. I don't really see the need for a full wardrobe since she doesn't go to daycare or "out".

You might want to return some of the bottoms and get some more shirts. At the toddler stage you usually need 10 outfits for the week -- there are some days when you will need to change him into another outfit during the day.

everything is 24m or 2T, I buy them interchangeably ... i figure if they pants are too long, ill roll/cuff them and id rather have the extra length to last through to the spring Chat Icon

Re: Clothes for fall & winter - how many of each?

I would exchange some of the pants for shirts. At this age DD can go through 2 outfits in one day because she has gotten dirty.

3 lined mesh pants - Keep 1 pair

4 swishy type casual pants - brown, beige, navy RETURN BOTH - they are cold and kids at this age slip and fall in these pants easily

4 fleece side-stripe pants (not gathered bottoms) - light grey, charcoal, black, navy KEEP ALL

2 fleece solid color cuffed pants - RETURN BOTH

2 cargo pants (navy and grey) KEEP ONE

3 utility pants (brown, beige, navy) KEEP ALL

3 jeans (different styles and washes) KEEP ALL

I would have gotten tan and or navy chinos.

Re: Clothes for fall & winter - how many of each?

DS is a big climber, and hates utility pants because they have no give, and the swishy pants are kind of annoying because you swish right off of chairs! I also have a thing against pants w/ elastic on the bottom, because they often get 'stuck' up on DS's thighs. So I'd return all those. DS mostly lived in comfy fleece pants or jogging pants last winter, with khakis and jeans for going out.

ETA: Mesh pants are COLD in the winter--I'd go with fleece or regular jogging instead.

Ahhhh, VERY good points. I'm laughing at the "swish right off of chairs" comment! So true, didn't think of that. Thanks!

thank you Yesi for the pants tutorial!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon it's amazing that they can give so many names to basically the SAME STUFF. Chat Icon

so definitely cut down on those and trade some in for soft cotton/flannel/fleece lined!

last year he lived in the waffle knit crawlers from the Gap. not sure if they make them in 2T but I am on the hunt.

good luck!

DS hates hats so i try to get coats with hoods. and gloves..well, we'll see if i can get him to keep those on this year..lol.

socks..you can never have enough socks. I feel like ds just wrecks them, or they dont wash well, b/c im always buying new socks.
