Coffee?

Hi girls,

I'm curious what different doctors think about coffee and ttc/pregnancy. I stopped having 1 cup of coffee in the morning a while ago and have tea instead but lately I've been wanting the coffee- when I was preg prior to the m/c's I had a cup daily and no dr was concerned- so I'm debating bringing it back. I'll ask in Kofinas office next time I'm in touch with them.
Interested in hearing your opinions!!

Coffee?

When I had my transfer I was told to avoid alcohol and caffeine, then when I met with my gyno at 8 weeks she said that I could have a cup every once in a while. I chose to just cut it out completely.

Coffee?

I never drank coffee, but since the beginning of my cycle in July, I have only had 1 caffeinated beverage - a soda - when my ILs took us to on a brewery tour. My Ob said I could have 1 caffeinated beverage a day.

Coffee?

I think the general rule is to keep it under "220mcg"/day... In other words, one small (regular) coffee is ok - a Tall Starbucks coffee is a little too much, but a Grande Misto is under 200mcg.

Re: Coffee?

I cut it out in beginning of pregnancy but had horrible migraines. Dr kofinas told me on cup of coffee was fine to have a day but to try and have some water after. When ttc I also tried to reduce intake but did not cut out

Re: Coffee?

After my m/c I read up on this a lot (I didn't know I was pg and was drinking 2 cups a day, lots of guilt, plus didn't want to ruin my chances of conceiving again, blah blah blah). The evidence out there is conflicting. Some studies show that any caffeine is fine; some show that you should limit it to 1 cup of coffee a day; one study I read showed that any caffeine in any amount had an adverse effect on fertility. I don't know. But there's no conclusive evidence either way, so I'm erring on the side of caution and making myself 1/3-caff in the mornings now (and evenings too sometimes!).

My OB & my re said ok to 1-2 cups per day. I'll also have decaf but I don't like the taste as much. I am now 24 weeks. Sometimes I don't even finish my cup.

Re: Coffee?

I love my morning coffee and it was one of the first things I asked my doctor. I drink one cup every single morning, very rarely do I have a second cup, maybe twice per month.

I was told in regular circumstances it would be fine to drink 1-2 cups per day, and that coffee has lots of good things like antioxidants. She even said once I was pregnant it would also be fine, but while I was going through IVF and taking all kinds of medications, to try and switch to decaf for that time. (Note: decaf coffee can still have up to 25mg of caffeine.)

She also said to have while coffee was fine, many people are really drinking a "chocolate bar in a cup" after adding cream and sugar, and to watch that.

Re: Coffee?

I think one cup a few times a week should be fine.

Re: Coffee?

I don't think one cup a day would be such a big deal. On the other hand it's so hard to make a decision since there is no concrete evidence showing otherwise. I would be on the safe side and limit the caffeine.
