Cohen's Children Hosp - follow up Q
we toured the NICU at Cohen's the other day - we found out that when DD is born she will be there fore 2-3 weeks. While there we asked the parking attendant if there is free parking for patients and she said that some drs validate parking. Does anyone know if Cohen's validates?
i know in the grand scheme of things, this is not something that i should be thinking about, but DH and I were just curious.

NICU at NSLIJ Lake Success/Cohen's Children Hosp
My son was born 10/2010 at 33 weeks unexpectedly and spent 10 days in there. I had no problems with anything. The nurses were great, the Dr's(when I caught them were good if you had any questions. I would drip my daughter of at school and get there for the morning bottle. Feed him, change him, snuggle for a bit (if he wasn't under the bilirubin light) then I would leave and go downstairs for a bit. Get a bite to eat and read for a while until it was time for his next bottle. Unfortunately I was only able to stay for those two because I had to cone home for my daughter. My husband would stop on his way home from work and spend some time with him.
There were only two times we werent allowed to visit because the Dr's were doing their rounds. Other then that they had an open door policy.
Good luck!! When are you anticipating her being born? I hope her stay is short and sweet!!

Re: NICU at NSLIJ Lake Success/Cohen's Children Hosp
were you able to stay over if you wanted? I have an older DD at home, but we live in Huntington, so getting there is a hike.
DD will need surgery after she is born so i'm not sure how long she'll actually be there. Hopefully just a week or two...
I am due mid-june, but i will be have a scheduled c-section probably the last week in may/first week in june. just depends on how things are going.

They have the Ronald McDonald house nearby if you want to stay overnight.
My DS was there for 11 days and everyone was amazing. The only time I couldn't be there is when they were doing shift change. But I would always make sure to be there for when the dr's would be doing the rounds so I could hear what was going on. The nurses were amazing and comforting. Hope your baby's stay is short!

I don't know about LIJ, but Stony Brook has 24 hour NICU visitation. You can come and go whenever you want. Perhaps they are the same way.

NICU at NSLIJ Lake Success/Cohen's Children Hosp
My son was born 6 weeks early and spent 40 days there. He had one surgery there when he was 2 weeks old. My daughter spent 1 night there. I loved all the nurses and the doctors there. Ask questions and request to see a doctor when you are there. I didn't sleep over but I did see other parents spend the night. It was tough but we survived. Please FM with any questions.

Visiting hours are 24 hours except for the two shift changes. I would look into RMcD house if you want to stay over.

Cohen's Children Hosp - follow up Q
Not sure about nicu but in regular part I have been there several times with my second son. The hospital itself will not validate for parking. Maybe if you had an appointment with a doctor for the day they may validate but generally no, you have to pay. Or you can try to find parking on the street. The nicu will probably validate the day you are released though. My first son was only there the couple of days after I had him til we were released and they validated it the day we took him home.

The NICU doesn't validate (at least not in 2010) BUT, if you park in the morning for a few hours and leave, tell the parking attendant that you are coming back later the same day and you can park again without having to repay. You pay the max rate for the day when you leave the first time.

I had my DS in December of 2011 and my DD in 2013 and yes they did validate the parking and we were able to park for free. I brought our parking garage ticket to the woman at the NICU desk. When we had to bring my son in for follow up appointments we were able to get the parking for free then too.

Re: Cohen's Children Hosp - follow up Q
My DD was just admitted for 2 days, not in NICU...just regular adolescent unit. We went in through the ER, and did not have to pay, or have the ticket validated. I just told them when I dropped off the car at the ER entrance that she was a patient, and we had no problems. Maybe call the NICU, or patient relations in the hospital and ask them to be sure.

I think you can find street parking near the hospital.
