cold sore
OK I dont think I have EVER had a cold sore in my life and I have a huge one.
What the heck do I do?
Do I put anything on it?
And how long do they last? Its gross looking.

I have one RIGHT NOW. It is SO attractive. 
Is it full blown? If so, not much right now. You have to treat them as soon as you feel them "tingle". I would go out and get some Aveeno cold sore treatment, it works great, better than Abreva.

Put Abreva on it right away! Keep it moist-Carmex also helps.The doctor also can prescribe a medication that will cut the outbreak/healing time in 1/2...I hate cold sores!!! Stress can often bring them on

You will probably have it for over a week. And word to the wise, when it starts to dry, make sure you put something on it when you go to sleep, like Carmex, because it will split open if you hit it while you are sleeping.

Mine usually last a week or 2..Don't let it get dry, that's when it hurts! You can cover it with a dab of cover up in the later stages..feel better!

keep dabbing alcohol on it with a tissue. every half hour. if you don't have any with you GO and get some immediately!!!
it will help dry it out and it will be gone in a couple of days.

DON"T PICK AT IT!!!! TRY NOT TO GET IT REALLY MOIST (say in the shower... the top layer will get moist and peel off)!!! The most important thing you can do is let it dry itself out. I have GREAT luck with Abreva.
I have suffered from these HORRID things since I was a baby. So I'm well aware of how nasty they are. It's kind of annoying because during the drying process it may have a tendency to crack, which can cause it to bleed, which makes the whole healing process even worse. Trust me, DO NOT PICK AT IT. Even if you're tempted and it seems like a good idea.... STOP! Keep putting Abreva on it (or the other remedies th ladies have suggested). Abreva is the most expensive little tube of medicine you'll ever buy! 
However.... you can go to your doctor and get a prescription for actual herpes medicine. My dermatologist gave me one and let me tell you, the FIRST sign of one, I pop the magic pill and it never even "erupts". So, for future reference, you might want to have a "prescription" on hand.

Sorry, don't mean to scare you...
Just one thing...you will feel the "tingle" when it's coming on. IMMEDIATELY apply Abreva. Somestimes it stops it from coming out!
Warning: Abreva is CRAZY expensive for a tiny tube, so use as directed.
