Somehow, if he endorsed McCain, I think this would be a-ok with you and others in the GOP. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my hunch.
Look, I don't know what effect his endorsement will have, I'm guessing it won't be huge among people who are already voting for McCain, though it may help decide some swing voters.
Despite Powell's role in our war in Iraq, he is still well respected by many voters. I'll be curious to see the next polls.

IMO, the point is that Colin Powell was the only part of this administration willing to admit that mistakes had been made. As he said today, without the threat of the weapons of mass destruction, there wouldn't have BEEN a war. Unfortunately, our own president still won't admit that going to war was a decision made based on an error in judgment.

Good point. And neither will John McCain, one of the main reasons he will never get my vote.
Bob Woodward's "Plan of Attack" gave an interesting account of this period. Who knows what really happened but it does sound as if Colin Powell was sidelined quite a bit in the Bush administration, and really did not involve Colin Powell much in the Iraq war planning process, other than asking him to present our case to the UN. He did so, using the information provided to him by Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld. He does admit it was a big mistake, and I can forgive someone for admitting a mistake. I can't forgive people for insisting that they are right (even when every piece of evidence shows they were wrong).

Re: Colin Powell is endorsing Obama
What's sad is that people will say he is only supporting him b/c of race.
It must suck when people in your own party do not think you are the best choice for president
I however applaud Powell for taking a chance - He couldve just stayed silent.

Re: Colin Powell is endorsing Obama
I loved Colin Powell's remarks on MTP. He was very clear in his reasons.
I was especially moved when he spoke of the mother in Arlington National Cemetary at the grave of her son, who died in Iraq.
I think he articulated a lot of reasons that many of us share about why Obama would make a better President.

Seriously. I know you and I don't agree on a lot of things in terms of this election but I was really shocked and saddened by this. Lieberman was my boy in 2000

That sucks. I think he would have had a much better shot with Lieberman but who knows... most definitely with moderate/conservative Dems like me. but his party would have been furious. and in the end, he has to appease them first.
oh well, sucks for me.

McCain is more down the middle than a true Republican. he is way more moderate than GWB! he already was not liked by many in his party for this reason. so choosing Palin made those people in his party VERY happy. it was all about getting the evangelicals on board.

I was watching this morning and I was thrilled to hear him voice all of my reasons for supporting Obama and not McCain! He even seemed moved when he was speaking of that soldier....I thought I saw tears in his eyes. I would think, as an undecided voter, this might make the decision easier.

I rarely comment on political debates but this really makes me scratch my head. I understand that the conservative wing of the party pratically comes when Palin walks in the room but really where were these people going anyway. Regradless of whom McCain picked as his running mate these people were voting Republican and truth be told this wing of the party tradionally votes and does not stay home.
While I am an Obama supporter, McCain choosing Palin as his running mate made me lose all respect for him. I too wonder where the McCain of eight years ago went. While I still would not have voted for that McCain, at least he was someone I could respect.

ITA. I probably would vote for Obama anyway, but seriously, if McCain had chosen Lieberman and stuck to his positions of 8 years ago, I may have considered him more seriously. There are lots of people who think this way.
The neoconservatives may have stayed home or voted for a third party candidate. But I still think McCain could have done better in his VP choice--Mitt Romney seemed pretty conservative, and I could at least take him seriously.
I really like hearing Colin Powell speak. He's direct and to the point, and doesn't use politician speak so much. He would have been a good VP choice too, though I suspect McCain was concerned about his role in the Iraq war.

Re: Colin Powell is endorsing Obama
I heard Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama this weekend, and I don't care what all the Republican Pundits say, this is huge, and I for one am thrilled!!! They are just mad that such a respected, intelligent, high profile member of their own party endorsed Obama over his own Party's choice.
Anyway, what Colin Powell said is EXACTLY how I feel, I truly respect McCain, I respect his service for our country and I really believe he wants what is best for this country, but because of his negative campaign (which is dangerous I think) and his VP choice, he thank God will not be our next president (hopefully the polls are right)
I was very much an undecided voter until the day that Sarah Palin was chosen as VP, then McCain tied my hands because there was NO WAY I would cast my vote and have their be even a remote chance that Sarah Palin could be President, she is not READY! ANYONE who has heard her speak in the only 2 major news interviews she has granted KNOWS she doesn't have a clue! And no Sean Hannity does not count, I mean seriously, on debate nights they report from the Republican Spin room, I think the Republican Party should put him on the payroll, that is if he isn’t already.
Anyway, I feel bad for McCain because this is it for him, I can’t imagine he will try to run again. If only he had stayed the McCain of past and picked who HE thought was best choice for VP and not crumble to the wishes of his Party, now I ask you, is this what a Maverick would do???
