Collars
The collar we bought seems to bother his neck and he is always scratching. Is there a collar that is more recommended to use?

Re: Collars
I don't keep a collar on Rocky. When I take him for a walk, I put a harness, not collar on him. It's more comfortable for him. (The id tags are attached on the harness)

Re: Collars
We bought breakaway collars that have the pup's name and our home # on it. They have that on at all times. When we go out, we use a harness.

Yes. We bought a collar the first day and he wanted nothing to do with that. He loves the harness. I think it's much more comfortable to be pulled by your body than pulled by your neck when walking.

me too...
Scott, leave the collar on.. once he get used to it, he won't scratch anymore. All my pups do this when they are younger.

Re: Collars
harnesses are better for toy breeds while walking as collars can cause their trachea to collapse.
i keep a collar on the dogs at all times since they have their id tag on it........... except dharma cuz she scratches her neck open raw, but thats a rare exception
dont worry, ALL pups scratch at collars when first put on. its something new and theyre not used to it. he will just have to get used to it

Re: Collars
Rudy ALWAYS has his collar on. Im so worried about him getting out or something.
Pet Smart has a machine that makes the tags up in like 3 minutes. thats where Rudy got his.
Pet smart also clips nails

Re: Collars
try a harness. Chihuahuas have a history of having problems with their throats (sometimes you will see they make a chortle noise to clear their throats). Coupled with the fact that their necks are rather slim- being small dogs- you should really only have a harness on him- that's what both my dog's wear.
you should be Chihuahua's for Dummies- it's jam packed with tons of info about chihuahuas.

Re: Collars
We walk Katie with a harness but she was a collar on at all times. When we first put the collar on she scratched at it for a week. I'd rather her fuss for a week and get used to it then her get loose and have no ID.

Re: Collars
try to have him wear it as much as possible during the day- my dogs both still scratch their necks right after I take the harnesses off.
