Collars- shock, citranella, vibration, etc etc
(No flames please. If you have nothing nice to say, please keep your opinions to yourself. Thank you! )
Okay so Jedi's barking has gotten out of control. I think he's actually gotten worse as time goes on. We can't put him outside in our fenced in backyard for more than a minute because he barks at air!
Now he's so bad he runs around the house barking every time someone walks by, a car goes by, a squirrel runs by, a leaf moves, or a tiny blade of grass moves. Basically anything.
He's driving us mad. We have a 2 year old that naps and sometimes when he starts barking, we literally run from window to window closing the blinds (and we have lots of windows). People must think we're freaks when they walk by and all of a sudden see someone shutting all their blinds.
Anyway, i don't want to do it. It kills me to even research this. I love my dog, but i can't stand the barking anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So anyone who has ANYTHING that works... please list it here, model types, the good/bad and ugly, pictures, etc etc.
TIA!

have you tried spraying him with a spray bottle? My aunt rescued a cocker spaniel that would walk around and just bark 24/7 for no reason... she started spraying him and it stopped.

Use
www.barkbusters.com
we just used them for our dog and the difference we saw in him happened in one day.
They dont use collars of any kind, just voice command and a few other things.

One of our dogs is very stubborn. He barks whenever he wants anything. (even if it's just to be on the other side of the doggie gate) He will bark for hours if you let him. Sometimes we don't even know why he's barking.
Someone recommended the Citronella collar. We're going to look into that. From what I've heard, it sprays a puff of citronella when the dog barks. It's the smell that they don't like

Re: Collars- shock, citranella, vibration, etc etc
we use a bark collar for our one Pug b/c he barks all of the time...he figured out how to become immune to it's effects...this dog is a challenge for sure...and one step away from a Pug rescue!!! ( I kid, I kid...that's at least how I threaten him!)
our other Pug we use a shock collar because of his behaviors, that is controlled by a remote, it totally works...now all we even have to do is put the collar on him, even without batteries and he listens. If he pushes it, all we do is make the alarm go off, which is the precursor to the shock, and he behaves. It is annoying b/c you have to carry that darn remote with you.

I feel your pain - we are going through the same thing
I bought the PetSafe ultrasonic device which worked for 2 days then he just didnt care or wasnt bothered by it. We tried a coffee can with some change in it - same thing - worked for a few days then it stopped affecting him.
So i just ordered a ultrasonic/vibration combo collar and a spray collar (figured id see which if any worked better) ...i'll keep you posted when i get them

I feel your pain and I'm also interested in tips. My dog recently started barking at everything. He's 1 1/2 years old-up until a few months ago, he never barked at the door bell or anything. Now it's bad! He barks at door bells and car horns on TV--and often barks at nothing in the middle of the night. I keep wondering what it will be like when we have a baby in the house! I won't use a shock collar. I'm curious about citranella. Anyone have any experience?

Oh he gets TONS. We have a fenced in backyard and we could be outside playing with him for an hour or two straight and it wouldn't matter.

But do you walk him? If you follow the Dog Whisperer's theory, dogs NEED to be walked. Running in the yard is not the same.
That being said, JR are known for being very very high energy. I would use training with a professional trainer and exercise. My dog is similar so I understand. That is partly why we hired BarkBusters to come.

Oh we have been through that here. My dogs bark during the night and have woke us all up, including my DD 16 mths. There have been plenty of nights she would not go back to sleep, really crappy nights might I add once she wakes up. But I always want my dogs to bark at night, b/c they are barking b/c they likely hear something.

Did you try associating the word quiet or a sound to shut up with a treat?

I have the same problem with my yorkies. The female will eventually quiet down but the male is relentless. I am surprised one of my neighbors hasn't shot him yet. I have used the citronella collar in the past and it worked. I will be reinvesting shortly

My mom uses this. It does help! We don't hear the noise, but the dogs do when they bark.

Re: Collars- shock, citranella, vibration, etc etc
you could higher a trainer. I am using muttmanners.com and they are great! 1 season and my dog is so different!!
but I have tried the bark collar with sound for my pug. it didn't work, he just barked louder over the sound. I can't use the shock because he has neck/spinal issues.
I tried the spray bottle metod. where you spray them in the face everytime they bark and use the command no bark. after they stop you reward them with a training treat. It actually worked really well for a few weeks. until my pug decided to bark for no reason wait till I sprayed him then he would run over to the treats and repeat. Just to get treats!!! So we stoped the treats part and just said good boy, but a week of that and he was barking again non stop!
I also tried the clicker. it did nothing
I highly reccomened Best Friends at muttmanners.com
