College presidents seek debate on lower drinking age

College presidents from about 100 of the nation's best-known universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.
The movement called the Amethyst Initiative began quietly recruiting presidents more than a year ago to provoke national debate about the drinking age.
"This is a law that is routinely evaded," said John McCardell, former president of Middlebury College in Vermont who started the organization. "It is a law that the people at whom it is directed believe is unjust and unfair and discriminatory."
Other prominent schools in the group include Syracuse, Tufts, Colgate, Kenyon and Morehouse.
But even before the presidents begin the public phase of their efforts, which may include publishing newspaper ads in the coming weeks, they are already facing sharp criticism.

I can kind of see what they are talking about. I remember being 18 and in college and because we couldn't drink--its like it made us wanna drink THAT MUCH MORE. I'm not 100% which side of the fence I am on this one, but I do agree that restricting it has made young people wanna drink like crazy when they reach college.

my opionion has always been
if you can die in war for this country at 18
and Vote
then you should be able to drink at 18

I completly agree with this, however I think its a cycle and then younger and younger teens will start drinking just like smoking

It used to be 18, so they should have stats on that. My BIL was caught up in the phasing up from 18 to 21. One day he could legally drink, the next day he couldn't. A little while later he could.... then he couldn't...

I don't think kids in my Junior High could have started much younger
we started drinking in 8th and 9th grade- and I went to a top public school on LI
I don't that has anything to do with the drinking age being 21
kids might try to get into bars younger-but that might be better then drinking in the woods like we did

i worked in student affairs on two well-known and respected Jesuit universities. the drinking was out of control. i handled all judicial and counseling affairs in my residence halls and 95% of the problems (drunkeness, being sent to the hospital, date rapes, roommate conflicts, ALL involved alcohol.
i don't think it's a bad idea, but it would need to be carefully done with boundaries still in place on college campuses even if the age was lowered to 18.
