Re: College Professors?
College professors do not have to undergo certification the way teachers do. It depends on your discipline and the school itself. My dh is a college professor and he has a PhD, as does everyone in his department. There are a few depts. at his school where people don't have PhDs, like photography. But most of the faculty does.
I think community colleges don't necessarily look for PhDs.

Re: College Professors?
I looked into this before becoming a teacher.
Most schools in NYS require a PhD or JD for a tenure track position. You can adjunct without one, but the money is not good at all.

Re: College Professors?
To get a tenure track job the qualifications usually go like this:
PhD in subject matter. English, History, etc. Sometimes they'll accept people who are less than a year away from finishing.
3-5 years college teaching experience
some require previous publications. Most want to see a record of scholarly activity (conference presentations, publication in journals, etc.)
To be hired as an adjunct (you are hired to teach one class or two and are only paid according to the number of teaching hours you are doing - no benefits, usually no office, etc.)
you dont necessarily need a PhD - but most adjuncts are grad students trying to finish their programs. A number of adjuncts at my school have masters - but masters in the subject area, not a masters in education.
