Coloring/Highlighting Hair while pregnant...
Hi All,
I have a question.
I have heard that you aren't suppose to color or highlight your hair while you are pregnant. Is this true? Latley I have read that you can. So I have a lot of conflicting information.
I have naturally brown hair and before I start TTC in March, I may turn my blonde highlighted hair back to brown so I don't have those dark dark roots for 9 months...
What have you heard?
Thanks!

Re: Coloring/Highlighting Hair while pregnant...
Hi,I actually had this question too...and i found the answer from both my Dr. and my colorist. Highlights are safe because the color never touches your scalp. If you get a single process (regular dye) then you cannot do it. I just got my hair done this weekend and wanted to be sure before I did it, but all parties said it was fine. Plus, my colorist just had a baby and said, she wouldn't have been coloring for the past nine months if it wasn't safe for her either....another thing you can do is see if they use vegitable dye...mine does. Hope this helps!

Thanks! That's really good to know because I don't like the way I look with my natural hair color! haha
I am glad I can still highlight!

Re: Coloring/Highlighting Hair while pregnant...
My doctor told me that there is not enough research on this topic, so she said if I had to dye my hair that I could, but try to wait until after the first 3 months. She said that for the dye to harm the baby, it would have to go into my scalp, then make its way into my bloodstream and then down to the baby which is very unlikely.

same here. I was told to wait until the 13th week, I had a single process and highlights totally safe. My bf is my colorist and she too said no proof that there is harm to the baby and my dr said the same thing!!

It is perfectly safe to color your hair, just wait until after your first trimester...I just colored mine recently...

Re: Coloring/Highlighting Hair while pregnant...
I just had my hair colored back to my natural (light brown) from a dark red. My roots were growing in and i am starting to get grey. I figured, if my hair grew in while I was PG (we are TTC now), i did not want to have grey, brown and red on my head or I'd look like a circus clown or a calico cat. I hadnt seen my natural hair color in 20 years so it was nice to go back to basics.
My hair dresser is cautious. She told me that single process should not be done within the first 3 months. Highlighting can be done with a cap but foil should be avoided since it touches the scalp. I dont like the way caps look so Ill stay solid light brown until it is safe to do otherwise.

Re: Coloring/Highlighting Hair while pregnant...
I asked my OB/GYN about this. He said not to worry about it and that he doesn't advise his patients against dyeing their hair.
I was told that the research is inconclusive and that there is such a teensy bit of hair dye absorbed through the scalp and that little tiny bit would get spread out over your entire body. If hair dye were caustic in such tiny amounts, it wouldn't be on the market.
No roots for me!

That's good to know. It seems that is the general consensus that it is OK.
I am glad because I didn't want to have to give up my blonde hair :)
I would have....but if I don't HAVE to....then I won't!
