Comirnaty
The most consequential vaccine in our lifetimes has received full FDA approval, and with it, a new brand name. Everyone please take note of where you were, what you were doing, what the air smelled like, the moment you first heard the official moniker of this groundbreaking, lifesaving miracle...Comirnaty. No really, that's the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine name. Comirnaty. I've typed it at least 20 times today and I still can't wrap my head around it. An actual branding agency came up with it, according to the trade publication FiercePharma. The word is a mashup of "Covid-19 immunity" + "mRNA" in the middle, and is meant to evoke "community." It's pronounced koe-mir'-na-tee, according to the FDA. Naturally, the internet had a field day with this one. It's a very dumb name for a very good thing. Like when Netflix briefly rebranded as "Qwikster." But I guess, gun to my head, it's the one I'd choose over the other names under consideration, which included: Covuity, RnaxCovi, Kovimerna, and RNXtract. I honestly can't wait to see what the Moderna vaccine will be named. Here's a humble idea: the Moderna vaccine. Or ModernaVax, if you want to be edgy about it.
I think the ad agency tried a bit to hard to put too many meanings into one word....

What an asinine name. Really that's the most clever thing they could come up with? Do you think they all sat around and threw out names?

I think that for most drug names, the ad team sits at a table and plays Scrabble. The loser has to combine their leftover tiles into the name...

Maybe spend more time on fixing the vaccine.

Comirnaty
Hasn’t it been that name since the beginning? Or is it new to the US?
I got that one at the beginning of August.

The name was approved her this week when the vaccine got full FDA approval. As far as I know it hadn’t been used previously. My vaccine card from March said PfizerBioNTech COVID -19 vaccine.

Comirnaty
Interesting.
Saw this circulating. “So I’ve been researching this. The Pfizer vaccine that is in circulation is approved under emergency use authorization. The one that was given full FDA approval is called “Comirnaty” and is the brand name of the drug. However, Pfizer has yet to produce a single dose of this vaccine. The reason is, if someone were to take this and then have an adverse reaction they can sue Pfizer the same way any drug company can sue if you get sick from taking approved medication. So they will likely never produce Comirnaty ever. If you read the FDA documents they repeat several times the phrases “similar formulations” and “legally distinct” when they refer to the new Comirnaty vaccine. Without the emergency use liability shield Pfizer won’t allow anyone to take this shot because they are unprotected. So the shots everyone are still getting is not FDA approved. Nothing has changed. Except now the powers that be think that they can mandate you to receive the vaccine due to FDA approval. However, by the FDA’s own published findings the one that was approved is “legally distinct” from the one that everyone is getting and is not even the same formula.”

Makes sense. My vaccine pass says Pfizer/BioNTech with the Comirnaty and everything is EU approved.

Yes, big misconception, I have read that the FDA approval for the Pfizer vaccine is NOT the one we all received??

That is not true. Same formulation.

same formulation or not, the one giving out right now was reissued under the EUA. Comirnaty is the approved one, which you will not see anywhere for years to come.

I got Comirnaty and it is in the EU, so not sure where you are getting your info of you won’t see it “anywhere.” The sticker says Comirnaty and that’s in my WHO yellow vaccination booklet. All other paperwork has Comirnaty and Pfizer/BioNTech.
