Commack district to address 'inappropriate' photos posted by students on Twitter
Commack school officials said Friday they are appalled about two photographs posted on social media depicting five district high school students in T-shirts spelling out "rape," including one showing a bound student at their feet. In a statement the district called the posting "inappropriate" and said it will be addressing "this serious matter [Friday] morning with the students who were involved and their parents." Five seniors are pictured in the T-shirts spelling out the word, according to a report by News 12 Long Island. In one photo the T-shirts spell "rape?" In a second they spell "rape" and show the bound student. The pictures were posted on Twitter and then deleted after protests, News 12 said. One student apologized on Twitter, calling the posting a "dumb mistake."
Maybe they need to spend some time in a rape crisis center to understand this isn't funny and shouldn't be just a dumb mistake!

i don't get it
what was the picture for? it doesn't make sense - its some guys wearing tshirts that spell rape. So what? Not that its something to be made light of, but i'm wondering what the point was from their point of view..

I don't get what they were trying to accomplish here? Just being dumb kids I guess.
To be honest, while I was reading the artcile (before I saw the picture) I was expecting to see girls, who were doing this for an anti-rape awareness campaign, not these idiots.

What's with the question mark turning into a period. Like it's no longer a question of rape if the person is bound?! Wtf

Re: Commack district to address 'inappropriate' photos posted by students on Twitter
I take it completely differently. To me, it says: "If there is a question (as in, is it consensual), then it is rape".
I don't think anyone should be punished. They should get the chance to explain themselves.

I agree. I think they were trying to shed light on something...at least I hope that's what they were doing.

Looking at it this way you could be right.
So instead of saying "It was a dumb mistake". He should've taken the opportunity to explain himself better if that was the case.

They probably wanted their 10 minutes of fame on social media but did it completely wrong!

Re: Commack district to address 'inappropriate' photos posted by students on Twitter
Personally, I do not see how it was an attempt to shed light on the topic of rape. If it was, it was a decidedly poor attempt and makes no sense whatsoever. Rape doesn't only happen if you are bound and gagged.
Given some comments no FB from people I know in the district, they are more mad that it made it to Newsday - apparently it should only be handled privately by the families.

Actually, when you look at it from a PSA perspective, it makes sense especially considering their body language and how it differs from the first picture to the second picture.
I think the student said it was a "dumb mistake" because he was scared of the trouble the picture would get him in or that admins would not buy his story.

Commack district to address 'inappropriate' photos posted by students on Twitter
I have to ask - would anyone think of this picture differently if it were 5 - 6 senior girls? To be honest, I will admit that I think I would.... Whether or not the message of a period, question mark, and being tied up makes sense...
Maybe and hopefully they were trying to shed light on it....But I still just don't fully 'get it.'

No matter how you slice it, the school district is doing something about it. Yep. Send a message that this bullcrap won't be tolerated.

It was senior picture day and the kids all put letters on their shirts. Then these idiots realized they had the letters to spell "rape". So they posed and took a picture and posted it. The sheer stupidity is mind boggling.

See I take it as, "If you are questioning whether a rape occurred, the only way it could be rape is if the person is tied up and bound".
Which is OFFENSIVE.

That's how I took it but I would want a better explanation as to what they were trying to do.
Forget the school district punishing them. If it was my kid, I'd have my own punishment set up.

Re: Commack district to address 'inappropriate' photos posted by students on Twitter
I live in a neighboring town and I have friends who teach at the high school. It was senior picture day and all the kids wear letters on their shirts. At some point, they were all grouping together to name/spell various words and this is how this picture came to be.
I happen to be on Commack moms and saw a thread on this explode. At that time, one if the boys started a thread acknowledging responsibility, never claiming it was a PSA of sorts ( frankly I don't think they were bright enough to have even thought of that) and basically saying he was sorry for and ashamed of his involvement . This jives with my teacher friends thoughts. Truly stupid, insensitive acts of juvenile boys. Unfortunately, it is a sad commentary on society in general and the way we view women. I just believe that theses kids are just so use to violence, in all forms. So sad.
