Commack Residents (especially those near Hoyt Farms) and Hauppauge Residents and Sachem Residents

The Brookhaven Laternal Project, did you know that they are running it behind 2 schools in the Commack district and 1 in Hauppauge. This same pipeline will be surrounding Hoyt Farms on 3 sides. Did you know this pipeline will be running behind the soccer fields that children play on constantly at exit 62?

A pipeline smaller than this whiped out a whole developement in Edison New Jersey. If you live in this area or near the LIPA right of ways between Commack and Yaphank or the LIE between Commack and Yaphank I urge you to get in touch with your elected officials quickly.

While I understand the need for more power burying a natural gas line that is carrying more than 14,000 pounds of pressure only 3 feet down below high voltage towers and behind schools to me is VERY SCARY.

When I asked how many blocks this thing could take out if there were a leak basically I was informed much of my area could be gone.

This is a VERY VERY scary thing.

We were told that they would send the 'pigs' through the lines once every 5-7 years to look for fractures and that the helicopters would fly over once a week to look for digging. That is not enough. You talk about a terrorist threat-- hmmm a HUGE gas line (we are not talking about ones that would run to your house or mine this is enough to fuel 300,000 homes) under high voltage electrical wires very close to an airport-- sounds like a recipe for disaster.

PLEASE GET INVOLVED!

ETA:

For anyone who thought this was not so bad. Here is a picture of the crater left by the explosion of a comprable pipe in New Mexico. It measures 86 feet long 46 feet wide and 20 feet deep.

This is not NIMBY! This is a matter of safety!!! That is rude!! Do you see the size of that crater! They should not be doing it that way!

The 2 plants that they have on LI currently run at 30% efficency. They should upgrade those and make them run at a better efficency. That ALONE could make up the power that would be supplied by this new plant!

They could run it through a less populated area and NOT around SCHOOLS!

When the pipeline exploded in the middle of the night in Edison NJ (it was smaller than the one purposed) the residents had 8 yes 8 minutes to get out. The WHOLE complex was destroyed! There was nothing left! In Kentuky when one went it took over an area that was 10 square miles. In this case if this one went not only would all the houses in the area be blown to smitherenies but anyone driving on the LIE would be in danger too. Not to mention that they are putting these under high tension wires- If this pipeline goes it will take all the power from those lines with it- no power for anyone for a VERY VERY long time! Due to the height of those towers- the fire plume will be huge! (Remember the forest fire in the pine barrens think bigger) and given enough winds home that are near this would also be in danger! Home that FERC and the goverment have not bothered to notify that this is even going on and that they would be in danger.

NIMBY -- if this was a group home or something of that effect yes to me that is a NIMBY, something that could wipe out a whole school filled with children in a matter of minutes and people's homes- that is not a NIMBY that is a matter of life

It wasn't rude- I am from Commack and know many people who live in the area.
I was just saying that NO ONE is going to want something like that near where they live. In a place so densely populated like Long Island, you are not going to be able to find a place less populated to put it.
If I had it my way - we wouldn't be running any natural gas or oil lines anywhere. I think it is time to stop the dependence on fossil fuels and start looking at alternative energy sources. Instead of creating a giant pipeline, why don't they make a windmill farm? Long Island actually has perfect climate for wind power.

Re: Commack Residents (especially those near Hoyt Farms) and Hauppauge Residents and Sachem Residents

I live between the elementary school and Hoyt Farm.

I got the original letter in the mail. But I didn't attend the meeting.

I am terrified.
Does anyone know this project will start construction?

not to change the subject here... but WHY are we one of the only areas in the US that is still using oil to heat our homes? Chat Icon

natural gas lines should have been brought in YEARS ago!! just like I think it's ridiculous that Suffolk county has no sewer system (for the most part). LI is so antiquated!

The dates are conflicting depending on who's informational packet you read- FERC or Iroquois. One said Fall of 07 and another states 08 but in the FERC packet it states that the plant should be operational by April 08.

Well the funny thing is that my parents who live in Commack have natural gas! I never knew anyone in Commack who didn't. So it's not helping them.

there are a few areas on LI that have natural gas, mostly in Suffolk. I don't get it... seriously. even old neighborhoods in other states brought in pipes years ago.

and what the heck is up with cesspools? Chat Icon this is 2006, not 1906 Chat Icon

a lot of areas still use oil, but I was actually going to point out that all of NYC uses natural gas- so there are natural gas lines running all underneath the city -where there are LOTS and LOTS of people.
