Comment I receive today
So, I went to the city to have lunch with my old coworkers that I haven't see in 2 yrs.
I am walking down the hall with my friend and one of the IT guys comes walking up behind us. He sees me and says, Oh hey Jen, good to see you. Wow you have put on some weight!   Oh.My.God. Did he just say that? Now, let me say, he is not originally from the US so maybe that is ok in his culture. But I was mortified. I said, yeah thanks I am aware of that 
So later I am on the train and I get a VM from him apologizing. Turns out my friend who was with me when he said it ripped him a new one and gave him my # to apologize.
The nerve of some people!!

Just out of curiosity is he Jamaican or from the Caribbean??
I had a professor in college say that to me and I was but someone later explained that in her Jamaican culture, it was indeed a compliment to mean I looked healthy and happy.

Just playing devil's advocate, but if he had said "Wow you have lost some weight!" You would have been thrilled, no? I never comment on people's weight and I don't like when people comment on mine, but let's say what we mean: It's not nice to tell someone the put on weight, but it's fine to tell someone they lost weight.
(not aimed at OP, just in general to everyone saying it's rude to comment on someone's weight.)

Ewww! That's disgusting!! Guys are so stupid. I once ran into an ex-boyfriend's friends at a bar and one of them said, "Holy shitt! You've gained so much weight!" Talk about humiliating!! (Cause you know my new found fatness got right back to my ex!!) To make myself feel better, I responded with, "Holy Shitt! You're still butt a$$ ugly."

This is for everyone saying that you can't imagine that it is okay in any culture.
It is okay in my culture. Most times it is a compliment because looking skinny isn't really kosher, other times it isn't, it's just stating a fact but generally the comment is not received as offensive. I am African.
To OP, I am sorry his comment hurt your feelings.

I know that in this country it's rude to comment on weight gain, but in some third world countries it's actually considered somewhat of a compliment because it is a sign that your family is doing well and not short on food.
My parents are from one of those countries and everytime I went for a visit I had to remind myself not get upset when some told me I looked "plump and healthy."
Just wanted to put that out there.

Uhh yeah, RUDE.... I had a co-worker who was not from here either but long enough to know what is right and what's wrong... There was a time my skin was broken out really bad. And every day she would come in telling me about a new remedy to get rid of it. Meanwhile she stuffed herself into pants and looked like a sausage... But I never said where to get NEW pants.
