Computer brains out there: How do you fix a slow computer?
Like, painfully slow?
DH's computer (a Dell) is a joke. You can barely do anything on it. Takes years for things to load. He has had it for 5 years.
So...does this mean he has to get a new Windows processor or something? What would that cost? Or is it just time for a new computer?

u could have a spyware problem.
when was the last time u defragmented your computer and deleted your cookies and temporary internet files?

install and run these programs.
Malware Bytes
Lavasoft Adaware
Spyware search and destroy
(the above are all free)
And of course, your virus software with the latest definitions.
Forgot to add - if you give me the service tag of the computer, I can look up the original specs to get a better idea of how 'good' the computer is. Service tag is on the back of the computer - small white sticker, with probably 8 or less alphanumeric characters.

if it's 5 years old you might need to upgrade your memory... i just did it to my MIL old dell, she only uses it for the internet and email but it was soooo slow, i spent $50 and it's now faster than mine...
you can go to 18004memory.com and buy new memory for your computer, they even have a systme than will TELL you what exact memory you need after scanning your computer. 100% safe my dad buys from this website all the time. It was great.

Sometimes reinstalling Windows is the only solution, but a very effective one. FIL's PC was very slow. All he had on there was anti-virus and anti-adware software. I reinstalled Windows, and it's much faster now.
I had to do the same thing on my PC a few months ago.

he may very well have a spyware problem. DH has the dell inspiron 1501 (so do i) and for weeks it was just crawling..even after increasing his ram chips to 1gig of Ram.
(so first check how much Ram his computer has...he may be able to upgrade that).
check the start up programs (go to run, type in msconfig, and you'll see the startup tab. I found a ton...i mean thousands of entries that were all ishkibble writing that was holding his cpu hostage. so he got infected with some sort of spyware.
Download ad-aware and spybot for free and run them.
his computer is working much better now!

Kingston.com and Crucial.com also sell RAM.
They have a drop down menu that helps you determine what memory your machine takes and how much of it.
5 years is old for a computer if trying to do edit music, video or pictures.

All good suggestions above. I just wanted to note that my BIL had gotten infected by an "anti virus" program and OMG I could NOT remove it no matter what tricks I tried. Well, I saw some suggestions online for Malware Bytes, downloaded it onto his computer, and BAM 377 found items, deleted them all and now his comp is pretty much infection free!
