Computer chips
So during Covid computer chips had a shortage because they were made in China. Then it was because of the supply chain issues. Now, according to the news it’s because they are made in Ukraine and Russia?? Which is it?
Power of the media.
Almost as good as my optimum bill jumping $60 a month “due to inflation” according to the rep I spoke to on the phone.

Re: Computer chips
Ukraine supplies a neon gas to help make computer chips. It isn’t that they are “made” there.

Re: Computer chips
They have components from a few countries. It is not all made in one place. Some of the chemicals are only found in certain areas of the globe.

Computer chips
I just can’t believe that with today’s technology we can’t make a stupid computer chip in America.
As a country we should be embarrassed that we rely on so heavily on other countries and can’t survive without them.

I don't think the issue is that we can't make a computer chip. I think it's the cost of labor here.

The component parts are only found in other countries. Of course we can make them here, but the raw elements are only found elsewhere. It is not as if we can just teleport them here, dig and find them here, or magically make raw materials appear in the US just because you want them to be here.

ITA.
My husband works in the I engineering industry, his company manufactures all types of components and chips for commercial airlines, the military, etc.The engineers on his team are fully capable of designing any chip they need, they just cannot always manufacture them here for a myriad of reasons some of which are listed above. It's not a labor cost issue. Also, there is no such thing a fully self sufficient country, we all rely on each other for various resources and to make the world go round.
ETA - To add, you also have to realize it's not as simple as "we should make our own chips". The components that go into cars, planes, computers etc are often times designed around one specific chip and usually those chips come from companies who specialize in just that. Even if we could magically create our own chips it would require a team of engineers to go back and redesign, redevelop and remanufacture all of the components around that chip. That's neither practical, cost or time efficient and no company would take that on unless absolutely necessary.
The issue is far more complex than you're making it out to be which is why it's been a problem for so long now.

To answer your question - yes. It is both
The semi conductors that you are referring to are made in Taiwan. There is no other factory in the world that can produce the chips that are that size and sophisticated. Intel has proposed a fabrication unit in AZ and OH that will have that capability. But the chips are made from natural resources/elements that are found in other countries like the Ukraine

Yes, this. So many natural resources are in Ukraine, and probably another facet to why Putin wants Ukraine so bad. It isn’t just the NATO aspect.
Every country has its exports. The US just can’t do it all.

This made me laugh. Not because you are wrong but the way you phrased.

I don’t think he is destroying it so there will be nothing left. He wants those natural resources. Russia is the biggest exporter of those resources to the EU and gas is now also most $11 a gallon here. I keep watching the gas prices, and I bought some before the war broke out at a reasonable $8 a gallon.
It also affects our heating. I am terrified of my heating bill this year, but I have basically just kept my heating down and dressed warmly.
But there will be something left for him and that is the resources. However, the fact that he is going after nuclear power plants is purely strategic. He doesn’t want to use it for bombs, but rather he wants to take them over and use the nuclear power as nuclear power (used for electricity) does not exist in Germany anymore. It’s complicated to explain the energy crisis here, but I can only hope the sanctions work.
He must be stopped.

Agreed, he needs to be stopped. It is getting worse and worse everyday and the pictures are so sad. I see the unedited ones and these poor people who had to die because of him is horrible.

Ok. So we can’t technically make a chip here. Why can’t we come up with NEW technology in lieu of a chip? Why can’t we use our own resources to create a new technology??????
