the computer shuts down and restarts inCESSANTly. I've neen on the phone with HP for over 2 hours now and they've finally realized there's a problem with the mother(f'n)board. SO, I will be sending my computer BACK to hp to be fixed.
This is BULLSHI___T.

Re: COMPUTER CRASHED... AGAIN!!!
sorry to hear...what did they do to determine a problem with motherboard?
if the computer (windows is restarting) i would think its more software related then hardware related. hardware can cause software problems but i'm just curious how they troubleshoot that over the phone

I'm probably going to botch this up because computer lingo is like japanese to me, but here goes:
They had me power down the computer, then restart and press F10 until the menu window opened up. Then, they had me press F9 until I came to another screen asking about testing the hard drive. I tested the hard drive for over 2 hours, and it went to 100%. She then told me to restart the computer, and the problem (starting and rebooting) still existed. They asked me a million times if I recently installed anything or did anything to the OS, and I said no.
My question to you - seems like you're computer saavy - I backed all my info up last week (all my docs and other things on the c:/). If I do in fact have some type of virus, will I get that virus again once I reinstall the documents after the computer comes back (from being sent out to HP)? I don't want to cause a problem like this again. Do I have a worm or a trojan horse causing this you think?
I'd like to know why this keeps happening so it doesn't happen again, ya know? I deleted over 2500 songs AND limewire a few months back (when this happened before) and I haven't downloaded anything crazy since. Am I doing this to myself each and every time? AHHHHHHH!!!

Re: COMPUTER CRASHED... AGAIN!!!
the test doesn't seem to point it to a parcticular thing but let them fix whatever...hopefully it fixes it and doesn't make it worst
limeware... is probally where it came from...
once you move yoru docs back on to your computer, a trojan/worm/virus can just be haning out there but would need to be activated some how but trying to click it, delete, etc...
i would run a full virus scan on your docs and try programs liek spybot s&d and spywareblaster ....
you have your docs backup on the c: drive or or cd-roms? did hp tell you they might wipe your data off (or they are going to save it?)

Re: COMPUTER CRASHED... AGAIN!!!
HP is going to wipe out my data. I've been backing up my data weekly for the last two months, and everything is saved onto DVDs. They have been backed up after limewire was completely deleted from my computer. I hope I didn't save a virus on there, like you said.
I have Norton 2006, and a few other programs for virus protection. I can't even get into my computer right now to check and see.
So limewire, even after deleted completely and even after having the entire OS reinstalled since, could still be causing these problems?

Re: COMPUTER CRASHED... AGAIN!!!
I've seen quite a few cases where a bad motherboard and/or memory causes repeated reboots. Not uncommon.
There is no one anti-virus package out there that will detect *everything*. The best thing to do is run a barrage of tools at it. Here are some links to free tools that are very effective at spyware/trojan horses: SpyBot Adaware
Limewire is a prime source for viruses and other "nasties". If you've uninstalled it, you won't get more viruses from the service, but anything you've downloaded from them could be infected. Running different anti-virus tools should catch almost everything.
