Coney Island: when does the demolition begin?

I want to go to a Cyclones game and play the water-gun-in-clown-face thing, but forgot that most of the vendors will be gone soon. Is it happening this summer?

OMG I hadn't heard about this/.... they're tearing down Coney Island? How sad. I used to love going there when I lived in Queens.- DH and i would go every couple of months during the summer.

I think they are keeping the Cyclone and the thing people used to jump from (I'm so embarrassed I can't remember the name of it!), as well as the freak show. I think it's Astroland that's coming down. Possibly for condos.Chat Icon

I think Abe Stark (the ice rink) is staying too.

My husband works for the Cyclones...but anyway...

The park will be open this summer (final season) and then demolition begins. So make sure you get out there before September!

Yes, the Parachute Jump is staying, it was designated as a Historic Momument last summer when they unveiled it after the restoration.

That was just last summer? I've always thought it was a historic monument!

Thank god the cyclone is staying. I think I'd cry if they tore it down.

One would think, but actually Astroland Park was privately owned and last year sold to a group of developers. I think the plan is to tear down the old park and replace it with a big hotel, shopping, movie theater, amusement park type of thing.

Indeed - Thor Equities bought it from the private owners. There are parts of Coney Island - Parachute Jump, Cyclone, etc that are historic monuments, but not the "Astroland" section w/the games and rides.
