Conflicted about looking for jobs for next year...
I would like a job on LI eventually but I am worried that due to the econonmy there may be excessing and then I would be screwed. However, there is talk of excessing at my own school and I am a little worried about next year.
Any thoughts????

Re: Conflicted about looking for jobs for next year...
NYC has a no-layoff clause, so you may find yourself excessed from the school (which would of course be a pain) but at least you'd have something somewhere. Are there any Fellows or TFA people in your school? If so, you'd likely get seniority over them because you are probably more credentialed.
I have a feeling LI will see a big revolt this year when it comes to school budgets, between the economy and the ire over property and school taxes, esp. in Nassau. Might be best to stay put for at least next year.

I actually have the same fear. I am so scared to give up my tenure in the city to wind up getting excessed a year later from a LI district. I am applying anyway because I have a 7 weeks old and know that it is better all around to be closer to home.

I'm out on maternity leave and since I've been out my principal has been fired and they said there are going to be teachers excessed. Can't wait to go back to that mess in April.

Re: Conflicted about looking for jobs for next year...
LOOK ANYWAY! you never know what is coming up!
I wouldn't worry about the economy too much. Districts have a good idea of what their budgets will look like... they know the numbers we don't. They are not going to offer or advertise a tenure track position if they can't guarantee it. Although I think a lot of LI districts will have the typical leave replacement type jobs. I applied 2 years in a row and was lucky my second year a retiree opened up a vacancy in my dream district and postion...and VIOLA! you just never know....
I would apply and apply again until you can get out there!!!

Teaching Fellows and teachers who come into teaching through alternative programs are licensed, certified, and can receive tenure the same as any other teacher. Excessing is done according to license appointment, not the program you enter teaching through. When there are too many teachers (according to the budget allocation for student enrollment) that is when teachers will start to get excessed.

Re: Conflicted about looking for jobs for next year...
you never know unless you apply- you have nothing to lose sending resumes out... once you are offered a position you can look at how the district is and your job security- no use in worrying about something that you dont know yet

The teachers in my school who came in through those programs have Transitional B certificates. So they are certified, but if we have to excess, they are the ones who would be more likely to have to go. Unless a principal really has a beef with a teacher, the people with the Trans B certs would be excessed over someone with initial/professional/permanent certification. (At least, this is likely to be the scenario in my school)

Re: Conflicted about looking for jobs for next year...
I have seniority over many people already since I have been there since last year....There is just a lot of uncertainty at the moment at my school...it's very unnerving

Transitional certificates are issued with the intent to be limited licenses. They expire after a certain number of years, and if you don't attain your permanent cert. by fulfilling the requirements then you will be fired. (over 1,000 teachers were fired in NYC b/c they did not have their credentials in order before their provisional license expired). This said, a teacher coming in to teaching under a Trans. B license may/may not have seniority over a teacher with a dif. provisional license depending on their appointment date. Teaching Fellows, TFA, and Teachers of Tomorrow are appointed.
