Congestive Heart Failure
MY DH's stepfather has been admitted for this. He also has severe diabetes, kidney disease and eye problems. I feel so bad for my MIL because she is in a wheelchair and has had some health trouble as well. To top it off, they are down in NC with no family around (they have good friends, though).
Has anyone's family had congestive heart failure? His doctor told my MIL to be"prepared".

Re: Congestive Heart Failure
Congestive heart failure is actually something a person can live with, if diagnosed and treated effectively. The condition in and of itself is not necessarily an indication that the person automatically will not survive it. Both my FIL and my father have been living with heart disease and congestive heart failure for over 10 yrs each, both have suffered heart attacks and bypass surgeries (my FIL is currently on the wait list for a heart transplant actually.. ) BUT thank Goodness, they are both still with us and holding their own due to a change in lifestyle, diet and medication..
This link gives a great description of Congestive Heart Failure: Link
Unfortunately, however, advanced age and other medical conditions come into play in this case, and that is what makes the condition grave in a lot of instances.. the other medical conditions he has can complicate things- but I will also add that my FIL has bad diabetes and was told he'd be gone 10 years ago.. so you can beat the odds!
I think after being evaluated by his cardiologist, you'll have a better idea of what your DH's stepfather faces and where things stand about his future health issues..
Wishing you the best.. I hope he is OK

Re: Congestive Heart Failure
My dad passed away from congestive heart failure (among other things). If he is receiving treatment early enough though, there is hope. I think the doctor told them to be prepared because it is a difficult illness. I will think good thoughts for you and your family

My father suffers from the same thing. He went into kidney failure as a result of a lifelong battle with diabetes, about 5 years ago, and was put on dialysis. Dialysis takes an immense toll on the body, especially the heart, so now he has congestive heart failure, has had several heart attacks and has required at least 3 stents in the last 6 months. Diabetes/dialysis/kidney failure will do that to you. Our only hope at this point is for my father to get a kidney transplant...

Re: Congestive Heart Failure
back in december when my grandfather was hospitalized (you may remember - thanks again for all the support, ladies!), the Dr told us to prepare for the worst.
He's now in better shape than ever.
You CAN live with congestive heart failure!

Re: Congestive Heart Failure
Like others have said you can live with congestive heart failure. There are many other factors that effect the severity of it. CHF is basically a build up of fluid in the heart, which leads to fluid in the lungs. It can be treated with Lasix (waterpill) but the main thing is that the inderlying cause needs to be identified. FM if you have a ?'s - i work in healthcare. All the best to him!!

Re: Congestive Heart Failure
My grandmother had congestive heart failure. She had had a stroke 7 years before and she had insulin dependant diabetes. She had 2 episodes of heart failure within 2 weeks and unfortunately she did not make it.
But as scary as the name sounds you can live with heart failure
