Considering Disney for Ryan's 1st birthday...
Is this stupid?? I can't decide what to do for his birthday and my family is HUGE - so I either do very simple, with just immediate family, or it has to be huge. So I thought, rather than a big party he won't even really enjoy, and DH took the week off (his bday is the day after Ryan's), maybe we'll go on our first family vacation. Would 3-4 nights be worth a trip (only doing one day in Disney and relaxing by the pool the rest of the time)? Any suggestions on a kid friendly place/also budget friendly? Anyone else torn on how to handle DC's first? I feel guilty not celebrating, but I know it's silly since he won't realize it.

I think going to Disney is a great idea. Although I love Disney so I'm a little biased . We stayed at Pop Century for our honeymoon. It's one of the budget hotels and it was very kid friendly. My only dislike was it seemed like the walls were very thin and we could hear the people/kids in the next room.
For more money you could try Wilderness Lodge or Animal Kingdom Lodge. They both have awesome pools. The Beach and Yacht Club also has a really big pool, but I think more geared toward older children.

I have resigned myself to reserving Disney until Gavin can really appreciate it....kinda the same as a first birthday party, no?
You'll probably end up spending the same for a party as for Disney too, but at least you'll get presents for Ryan and you can celebrate with your family. A first birthday is also a celebration for the parents as well, celebrating the first year of their child's life. Just another way to look at it.

Honestly, I'm looking at it as we all could use a little sun and vacation. DH haven't traveled since I was 12wks pregnant and that wasn't anything too exciting. And we're hoping to put the house on the market and feel bad, but I don't want presents when I think of doing a party for him, I think, "oh geez, we're going to have another pile of toys he doesn't need"

We did disney when DS was 11 months old and only had a very small immediate family only birthday party for DS a few weeks later. It was wonderful. Just as an FYI I would make reservations for any resturants you want to go to. Check out allears.net for the scoop on disney. I highly recommend eating at Canada - the food is 5 star rated.

We are holding off on Disney until DD is 3. The thought of schelpping.chasing her through the park now makes my head spin!
What about just a beach vacation?

We are bringing Megan to FL next week- we are going with my parents to stay at a time share they own.
We won't do disney, but are going to go to Universal and Seaworld. We might do Animal Kingdom too. I'm really not sure what we are going to do with her at the parks, but its really a chance to go on vaca for us and have live in babysitters along with us!
I'll let you know how it goes!

Re: Considering Disney for Ryan's 1st birthday...
I too was totally torn on how to celebrate DSs first. In the end we did 2 small family parties (with immediate family alone we are nearly 40!) and we decided to put the money towards something he would enjoy more, in our case we are planning on putting in a swing set in the spring.
I am thinking of doing Disney with DS even though I swore I wouldnt until he was 3 but I think we would also do Seaword and maybe Animal Kingdom as I think he might enjoy those even more!

I was wondering about this.. My birthday is Aug 20th and hers is Aug 22nd so with that free on your birthday deal it may work out to our advantage..
We'd probably stay off campus to save money.. but we aren't sure.. any info you can give would be greatly appreciated

Re: Considering Disney for Ryan's 1st birthday...
I think it is a great idea but you should try other considerations too. It sounds like more of a reason for you three to have a vacation then just see Mickey Mouse. Tickets at disney are 75/person for one day (not for your DS).
I think Sea World is a little less $$ but you can go for 2 days (for price of one). Your DS would enjoy that since it is like a HUGE aquarium (with rides). They are so family friendly that if you wait in line for a ride (while DH waits with baby) they give you a pass so DH skips the line.
It really depends on what you want because at 1, you and DH still get to call the shots. Once he realizes about Disney and wants to go you have no other choice =)!
ETA: I am not saying choose between Disney or Seaworld. I am saying you could go to VA, SC, MIAMI, etc. to have your special excursion with him because there will be always some children friendly things to do.

Re: Considering Disney for Ryan's 1st birthday...
We went when Rylan was 7 months. The only thing is really LOVED was Animal Kingdom. I personally thought it was kind of a waste. I definitely won't go back until he can understand and appreciate it.
Then again there's a big difference between 7 months and a year so he might enjoy much more at 1 year.

Multi day tickets come out to much less than $75 per person and her DS would be free.
I say go for it! We went when Emma was 19 months old and she had so much fun! Who cares if he can't remember it..we all do a lot of things with our kids that they can't remember.

You can stay on site for less than $100 a night. Plus you get free transportation to the parks, free transportation to/from the airport and free extra magic hours in the parks which is only good for on-site guests. www.mousesavers.com is a great resource, as is www.disboards.com

I went on my Bday and was free! DS was 3 days away from turning 3 so he was still free.
Definitely pre-register. If you buy multi day passes you can't get a full day free but you get other stuff at will call like a birthday fast pass for all rides, a ticket for a future day free or a gift card.
