Constant chewing on shirt
I'm at my wits end with this. DS is ruining new shirts. He's always been very oral sensory seeking but lately it is out of control. We've redirected, used chewy tubes, sprayed apple cider vinegar on his shirt etc... Nothing deters him. School and I were trying to get rid of the chewy but now the shirt biting is super high. I don't know if it has to do with seasonal allergies or what. Teacher said some parents used something called bitter apple which is for pets. I'm on the fence using something that is for pets for my child. Anyone use this? Any advice? TIA

Re: Constant chewing on shirt
My son went through a phase like that years ago. We put him in tighter shirts, so he couldnt pull at it, and stopped putting him in collared shirts. It took awhile, and finally stopped.

Thanks for your suggestion.
I just realized that he doesn't do this with swim shirts.

Re: Constant chewing on shirt
How old is your DS? Finally.....my DS has outgrown the habit. This habit was the worst around the age of 4. The only thing that worked for us was Jigglers. Chewy tubes weren't enough. The vibration of the Jiggler provided the input he needed. My son is now 6. I have provided his teacher with packs of gum. He knows to ask for a piece if he feels the need to chew.

Constant chewing on shirt
my friend went through this, and they now give him wash cloths to chew on... it took some times, but with re-direction, he now chews the "rag" instead of his shirts

Constant chewing on shirt
One thing I wanted to say is that we definitely see spikes in undesirable behaviors when seasonal allergies peak in our house. So that could be part of the reason he's doing it so much now.

DITTO to this. My son has been OFF the wall lately. I use D-Hist...it is an all natural allergy reliever.

Re: Constant chewing on shirt
yes my DD does this, its part of her sensory issues, but also her hypotonia in her mouth area. She used chewies... different kinds depending...a necklace, bracelet and handheld. She still chews through her shirt sleeves!
we use these

I bought the same chewlery necklace. He started taking it off and playing with it so I have to get him to keep it on. Always something! Thanks guys!

My daughter preferred to chew on the plastic Clip that attached it on instead of the rubbery piece, she broke hers! I found the bracelet got the most use actually. She would go for her sleeve and it would be there.
